Just to be clear.We've criticized the culture of some instances & will continue to, but we're not in a position to promote any.We're (obviously) on eldritch.cafe but have not spent enough time on many other instances to say it's better than everything else out there & are intentionally withholding judgment.If there's a blossoming of spaces centered on Black liberation, maybe we'll change that approach. But for now, being Black in the mayoverse is making the best of a hostile environment.

We're only aware of three instances with at least one Black mod or admin. One left mastodon; one we have serious reservations about; and the third we haven't really looked into that much. On top of that, just having Black people in positions of power in a community isn't a guarantee of a generally pro-Black culture or stance, as any study of social media or the internet or the history of life on Earth can tell you. But that we only know of **3** is still...something. Lmao.That's all for now.

Actually wait forgot something.Given the situation, while we think it's important for people to know they have the option of migrating instances if they don't like the one they signed up on & want to make sure people know how to do it, we generally aren't in the business of demanding people leave any instances either, for several reasons. If people leave because of things we said the choice was still theirs, as it would be if they instead decided to stay & attempt to address their peers.

@resynth1943 Because skin color affects everyone's life on the most fundamental level. It affects our experiences, our skills, our brains.It's a truism that there's a business case for diversity: any organizationg is missing out on invaluable perspectives if it doesn't include a variety of people. There are red flags white cis het abled men will literally never notice, you need people who aren't those things to pick up on and effectively address certain kinds of issues.

@resynth1943. I'm white so it's easier for me. Black people and other people of color get asked questions like yours all the time. And not everyone is asking in good faith. There's often little if any way to distinguish a genuine query from sealioning so people get hostile or disengage sometimes and that's very understandable and okay! They do not owe us white people their time, energy and expertise. There's little reason for them to give it out for free. Don't expect it.

@webb Consider how little they have to lose by "antagonizing" some rando who doesn't know/care they're already antagonized the black person. What are they losing by refusing to engage? What do they owe to a sealion or someone already proven to be, charitably, at the very beginning of their learning-about-racism journey? There are so many people like that. @webb @resynth1943 Because the question, when asked of a stranger, is exactly the same whether it's coming from a clueless but well-meaning person or a sealion who just wants to waste someone's time and energy.Because such questions are always better directed at a good search engine than an individual stranger. There are tons of good resources out there. Don't expect a random black person to offer a stranger a free education.

@bright_helpings @webb anyway, I think we've got slightly off-topic. I'm well aware of the injustices against black people. There was actually a news article the other day which showed police officers slashing people's tires, then blaming it on the protestors. *That's* the sort of thing we should be ostracising. At the same time, I think resources should be made available to point people in the right direction.

@webb @resynth1943 I mean to go back to the original point about instances needing non-white admins, what you guys are doing here is a great demonstration of what practically every white person thinks like, and what practically no non-white people think like. This is my point: we miss out on everything else if we just get stuck in these thought patterns that white supremacy teaches us and that we white people benefit from.
