@fitheach Just rest on the sofa and watch something (Netflix, rc3 streams). I would consider not moving around :)

@_xhr_ Well, actually, that was exactly what I was doing when I broke the DVD drive. I was settling down to watch some Star Trek TOS. I popped the DVD in the drive, and it wouldn't close. I push the tray in, and it just comes out again.I'm currently installing an old PC to play the DVDs.

Ach, this broken DVD drive is becoming a real pain.I have an old PC which is the only one with a functioning DVD drive. The PC is running Debian Etch, and is a Pentium III (no, really). I don't want to update the Debian release as the PC might not cope. However, VLC doesn't override screen blanking, which happens every 10 mins. Caffeine doesn't exist for this old release. In the meantime, I have tied a piece of string to the mouse, so I can remotely shoogle every 9 mins. ๐Ÿ™„

@fitheach in my experience, it's safe to upgrade to newer debian ( or Slackware) on very old hardware. Obvious warnings against heavy desktops like gnome and KDE apply, but everything else usually works better with upgrades. (I'm basing this on my many experiences with ancient hardware enlisted for community and nonprofit comouter labs and the like.)

@klaatu If I did upgrade and the PC became slower, or indeed didn't work, I'd be really stuck. I need to get a new DVD drive for my laptop anyway. Once that is sourced, I can look at upgrading the old Pentium III with impunity.

Right, the string is deprecated. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ xset s off -dpmsSeems to do the trick. This disables DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling) and prevents screen blanking.
