Do you ever wonder why Star Trek even /has/ Phaser Rifles when the small handheld phases can cut through doors and blow up buildings and even kill Borg drones if they're equipped to change frequencies randomly?

@Azure So that the screenwriters can show it's Serious Time, obviously.

Speaking of Trek Weaponry one thing I /did/ like from DS9 was the slugthrower-with-integrated-transporter.It feels like you should be able to build a larger version of that and use it on a ship, though maybe having a heavy enough projectile moving fast enough counts as a high enough mass that it would be impractical for a shipboard transporter.

@Azure For more accurate long-range aiming and more space for power cells, maybe?

@errant Power cells is a good point, if you're going to be out in the fields and using it a lot.

@Azure Makes you wonder if frontier colonies/shipwrecks with agressive fauna make do with whatever they could do to improve standard handheld phasersThere is just something amusing about such a high-tech device being augmented with a carved wooden stock and duct-tape

@Azure Accuracy? Ergonomics? Also, that transporter rifle was real awakening for me a long time ago when I saw that episode broadcast, probably the first time I saw DS9.That gun felt actually futuristic, totally sci-fi, not just some dressed up facsimile of things I am familiar with.

@terrana @Azure One of the key functions of non-covert weaponry is intimidation. If one side backs down with at most warning shots fired, that’s a loss minimizing outcome for both.Of course, that’s not flashy, so we rarely see it on screen. Although it can make for a great psychological study of the characters involved.

@starkatt Sure! I'm curious. The main obvious answer so far seems to be 'more power cells'.

@starkatt Huh, interesting. I thought the ease of aiming rifles was all down to the barrel shape and rifling making the bullet fly straighter.I didn't realize there was as much of how you hold and sight along it involved.
