hate how iphone autocorrupt assumes i mean "it's" when i mean "its"it assumes i have bad grammar when i meant exactly what i typed. sometimes i wish software had a "actually has a functioning brain" modesame goes for customer support. "put me over to third line support please, can i talk to an engineer or netop please?"for some stupid reason, companies that are largely run by nerds never offer a back door for the nerds... not that i know of anyway. you're always left taking to some person that knows far less about the subject than you do.and you know you're among the 1%, or even 0.1%, so you allowing the nerds to enter the inner circle wouldn't put too much of an extra load on the system and would save so much time...sometimes i think nerds are foolish for not taking control. they're largely content working for the man. why don't you *be* the man? the world runs on our tech, yet we allow these morons to control us...we are fucking idiots.suppose the geeks of the works objected to thing X. suppose we all went on strike. the world would halt and all attention in the media would immediately shift to us.hell, we could take down the servers of all major media organisations and if confronted by our managers we could say "oops, we're sorry, we are working on it" while also pushing our agenda. double talk. politicians do that all the time.

@thor I'm not an engineer or anything but I am an advanced user. I wish I could just skip all the "maybe you're just a dumbfuck?" tech support questions and get to the real issue.

@thor Well, for one, I can think of preserving the character of nerd culture in a way that explicitly excludes far-right extremists while keeping things from becoming meaningless and *too* mainstream.

@thor Not really. Only inasmuch as we keep nazis out. Besides that I don't really care. I don't want an echo chamber.

@tskaalgard an organisation needs some kind of direction. this is both the drawback and the benefit of an organisation. if nobody can agree on anything, the organisation will have little purpose.

@tskaalgard after all, the very definition of a nerd implies swimming against the current...

@tskaalgard in some places, this current may lean left. in others, it may lean right.

@tskaalgard this might get me crucified, but the nazis did not do only bad things. hitler was a vegan and liked his dog. nuance. selectively considering all options. seeing if they will benefit human kind. it requires a kind of cool head, blind of dogma, ideology. i instinctively reject dogma and anti-dogma. i feel relatively alone in my positions because so many people are keen to judge. the nazis had what they felt were good intentions: the road to hell is littered with good intentions as they say. we are all fallible.

@shit @thor Yeah, I think a consensus on the definition of "nerd" should perhaps be the first order of business. I would define "nerd" as someone with hobbies and/or interests in areas traditionally considered niche, esoteric, obscure, especially computing, culture, literature, et cetera.

@tskaalgard @shit yes. i have that. now, in order to do that, you must be willing to go against the current.

@tskaalgard @shit nerds don't set out to be rebels. i know i didn't. but in a way they are. they just don't want to take it too far...now, an association needs a purpose. some kind of thing they want to accomplish in society at large. in my experience, much of what nerds want run contrary to the mainstream, or at least push for ideas that most people aren't ready to accept yet.

@thor This is a massive misunderstanding of why people hate nazis. I'm not going to say "well, Hitler drank water so it's evil!" What makes a nazi a nazi is the evil things. You can't look at the regular human things nazis did and say "see! They weren't *all* bad!" That is almost an argument in bad faith. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt for now and say that this is a misunderstanding and not malice aforethought on your part.

@tskaalgard ah, the "nazi therefore anything they believed in is bad" argument... which is exactly what i'm pointing out the flawedness of. however, i'm arguing from the position of "this flawed notion is what many people have"

@tskaalgard there is this movie about the Norwegian resistance movement against the Nazi occupation. at one point, a Nazi officer labels the resistance fighter as "these terrorists" and it puts you in the shoes of the Nazis. they genuinely believed that, misguided as it was.

@thorAn ideology based on racism, eugenics, genocide, and ruthless top-down decision making is as evil as any real thing can be. There's no room for debate or "nuance" here. Nazi apologia and edgy faux-nihilism is what drove a large chunk of the millenial nerds into far-right positions like that. I won't be participating in this discussion any further.
