@emacsomancer @idanoo Funny, today it's the brother printer giving me grief.Any printer I try, I can't get consistently working on Linux. It's the one thing the OS truly sucks at.

@ChrisWere that's just because you're a Linux user. If you try another OS, you'll find that you simply hate printers in general.

@ChrisWere printers in general tbh. Some printers have a resvoir for "waste ink" but they end up wasting at least half of your ink and eventually it drowns in it and it costs more to fix than to buy a new printer. Or what some manufacturers do, they mark the ink as bad, even though I was able to print like 100 pages when the low ink warning was up

@kura @ChrisWere oh yeah not to mention that the thing you actually care about, the ink, costs them $0.15 and upset it to $20

@kura @ChrisWere Lazer printers are not even Lazer anymore they're LED and the cartridges are expensive but it pays for itself after a while

@Jessica @ChrisWere I love the German term "tintenpisser" for ink based printers.laser printers (be it with actual lasers or LEDs) are more expensive to buy, but don't dry out, run for a long time on a single cartridge, and the ink can't get smudged.not good if you need to print pictures and the likes tho.

@ChrisWere you really should be able to drop the 'on Linux' portion of this tweet, printers are the obnoxious brats of peripherals.

@ChrisWere I have legit never had issues with printers on Linux. Even the one long shot I had, an Epson 2-in-1 printer, worked ootb.

@Batcastle I've never not had problems on Linux. Of the dozens of printers I've tried on Linux, there's never been one that 'just works™'.

@architect At least you get some degree of support on Windows/Mac. I've never come across a printer that is officially supported on Linux.

@ChrisWere Yeah. I even had printers auto-adding themselves to my computer at school. No setup required. They were network printers. Mostly HP and Dell. Stuff works like a charm.

@ChrisWere @architect canon actually supplies .deb and tarball drivers for many of their printers. I always go canon since I figured this out. They are not fully featured GUI driver applications, and are just the basic level drivers, but this is a plus to me.

@Hawk1291 TBH, a lot of the printers that come with drivers still give me agro. Usually it's something to do with the distro not lining up with how the drivers work.

@ChrisWere I feel ya, you ain't alone. I always have an issue with my Brother and work Xerox in Arch. Every time I do a big update, I have to go through the hassle of removing and reinstalling the drivers for each one. With SUSE, Debian, and gentoo however, I never seem to have a problem.

@ChrisWere I agree about printer drivers. I currently put my file I want printed on a USB and then stick the USB into the printer to print direct off of it -_- so annoying.

@ChrisWere I had one magical year back around 2016 where my printer and scanner worked without issue. Then who knows what happened and the scanner isn't recognized by any distro and the printer only works on select ones.
