I just leaned about the CASE Act, a Copyright law shoehorned into the relief bill, and it doesn’t look as bad as I expected. Rather than reading some blog article about it, here’s the actual text: https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/1273Participation in a Copyright Claims Board proceeding shall be on a voluntary basis in accordance with this chapter and the right of any party to instead pursue a claim, counterclaim, or defense in a district court of the United States or any other court, and to seek a jury trial, shall be preserved. So, this bill introduces a new small-claims copyright “court” thing, but you can choose to opt out of it as a defendant. I don’t really see a problem here except that they’re spending our tax dollars to solve an unnecessary problem. Copyright should be abolished.EFF is all like ‘THEY PASSED A BILL WITH COPYRIGHT IN IT, GOTTA RILE UP OUR BASE!!!’

@alex what does it have to do with the relief bill, though?

@dermitbones They attached it to the relief bill so nobody would say no.

@alex @dermitbones They put it in the relief bill because they haven’t done much legislating for the past 4 years.

@alex I know, it's such a scummy move to do. They know it wouldn't stand on its own.

@dermitbones @alex It is truly the most scummy thing a lawmaker can do. There needs to be standards that Congress is held accountable to in order to prevent stuff like this from happening again in the future (and also, term limits).

@alex Just a second, it says the “proceedings” are “on a voluntary basis” but that if you don’t do it with the Copyright Claims Board, you can seek a jury trial in court. It does not say that the process itself is compulsory, it says “you do it with us or do it with the courts and you have a right to jury trial” Implementation can be wildly different from the letter of the law though, that’s why I’m not 100% concerned with this, however I don’t wanna go to court just for posting some random meme that happens to use copyrighted material, which is how the letter of the law is reading to me.Seconded that copyright should go away, back to the 20s (15 years after publication and not a second more)
