The biggest lie in America: That people desire jobs. Being beholden to an employer is not a thing we desire. It's a compromise, a sacrifice we're willing to make for money. But it's taboo to admit this in many situations.

@CarlMuckenhoupt This is a change that happened in marxism, gradually, starting in the early 1880s. (Paul Lafargue.)I think the more we wake up to the difference between our desire to contribute, to help, to feel (and be) needed, to make a difference in each others’ and our own lives, vs the realities of wage labor, this change will keep happening. In Sweden even during the height of social democracy there is this phrase… “Earn your keep” (“gör rätt för dig”). From each according to their ability and what not.Just that a lot of employers and their cages aren’t particularly satisfying, in that regard or other regards. The only motivation to participate is money (which can directly mean the difference between starving and dying so I get it).

@Sandra Sometimes I feel like "work that satisfies your need to contribute to the community" and "work that pays money" are increasingly disjoint. Especially in software, where the most enduringly important work is often open-source work done by hobbyists, and the paid work is often downright antisocial in its aims.It almost seems inevitable. Any company that doesn't prioritize its own interests over the common good is going to be a competitive failure.

@CarlMuckenhoupt Especially in softwareYes. Installing Linux at age 19 ruined my career for sure.Reading that anarchist FAQ that came with Debian…I definitely have broken hard with RMS and FSF, but I can’t unrealize that FOSS is a good thing and that IP laws are bad. Those values have set themselves pretty core into my fiber at this point.
