@Gina @brandon A gather.town meetup? A speeddate session with breakout rooms to meet some new people? A meeting with breakout rooms to find people with common interests? A meeting with breakout rooms to find people at the other spectrum of your own bubble? A meeting room with breakout rooms like the 'human library' initiative? A common format for a shared 'end-of-year'-message with a certain hashtag, with favourites? Making a poem (for someone, or in general)? A bingo? A pubquiz? A crazy 88?

@Gina Some years ago someone organised a secret Santa. You could register, and then you'd have to send a gift (digital or otherwise, but of low monetary value) to a randomly chosen person. And you would receive one from someone else. It was pretty fun. :) @brandon

@Gina If you're looking for a FOSS alternative, you can sign up to use #Matrix on element.io. It has guaranteed chat and video quality (although for large group chats it's really just jitsi, which could be a benefit as even people who aren't registered on matrix can join the jitsi video chats with those who are).

@Gina most FOSS purists won't be okay with it, but if you're looking for a turn-key solution that's free I'm not sure if there's much better. If you're open to self-hosting stuff xmpp and matrix are good solutions. You can also just pay to host one of those for you.

@Gina prosody (xmpp) is pretty easy to set up yourself (at least compared to matrix) and includes video chat. I believe if you set it up to do so though matrix comes with video chat (its p2p so you need a relay server for NAT traversal.)

@Gina I would never use discord. It's proprietary garbage. You can join #matrix using an user friendly client like element.io. It has Jitsi implemented for video so it just works out of the box. Although the best option would be to self host your own matrix server, that way you don't slow down anyone else's server
