Am I the only one who has a great business idea every week only to find out that it already exists and there are already a billion companies/apps/websites doing it?Today I invented StackExchange btw. 😑

@Gina It happens to me too, but keep at it and one day you will find that original, bespoke nugget of an idea

@Gina nah this is exactly why I never actually finished a CS degree. I’d come up with an idea, start coding, and then find out there were twelve libraries in literally every single possible language doing the exact same thing already.Fast forward 20yrs and now I just don’t care. If I write something useful to myself that’s good enough. If one other person finds one of my ideas useful, that’s icing on the cake.

@Gina create an app that checks if your idea already exists!(And then steal the submitted ideas)

@Gina are they generally profitable companies/apps/websites? If so, it sounds to me like you're generating really good ideas and that, when you do eventually have an idea nobody has built yet, you should consider putting a lot of effort into making it happen.

@Gina if no-one has built your idea, it is probably a bad idea. The cheapest confirmation of an idea is seeing others run a profitable business on that idea.

@Gina @harding I was generally not a fan of Jobs. But here he was spot on:> Ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.—Steve JobsOr, like so often, Jobs just refined an existing idea:> Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. —Pablo Picasso

@berkes @Gina @harding Those are really good quotes though. I find myself in the same situation, having great ideas all the time (though I'm generally more interested in the less lucrative kind that would need voluntary contributions 😅) and end up hating myself for not executing any of them. Sometimes I start, most stay unfinished. I have hopes for the #bitcoin generation to retire rich and start nonprofit software companies. That's my dream though 😅

@stevenroose Ahh, don't hate yourself for not executing all your ideas. Be proud for executing what you are currently executing. Having an idea is cheap; and hardly takes time. As cheap and as often and as quick as taking one shower.Executing takes months or years of perseverance and focus. Perpendicular to "having loads of ideas while showering".That is what I find hardest: committing to go all-the-way with an idea and not be distracted by neat new ideas all the time.

@berkes @stevenroose Another part of the battle is deciding which ideas are worth spending time on. A mistake at that point can leave a great idea behind, but not for lack of effort, just a misplaced effort. It really is a beautiful thing when all things align and an idea comes alive.> Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. This is a great quote, feels very relevant these days, especially when there is so much opportunity to not be productive with all he covid shit going on.

@GinaNo offence, but that's not a testament to your inventiveness, however great it might be. It is a testament to the utter mediocrity of the #IT industry. The idea in itself is unimportant and pretty much *should* be unoriginal (Facebook was invented a thousand times before #Facebook). What you want is 1. #capital and 2. execution capability.
