GNOME 40 is gonna be great! It’s looking more and more like elementary OS, and that’s nice. It’s reassuring to see elements of our design direction validated not only by our hundreds of thousands of users, but by GNOME designers and user testing. https://blogs.gnome.org/shell-dev/2020/12/18/gnome-shell-ux-plans-for-gnome-40/

Seriously, I’m happy to see this direction from GNOME and hope GNOME and elementary can continue to work together on design, inspiration, and technology. Perhaps there are things from the GNOME 40 design that elementary can look at more closely and learn from, as well!

If you are not familiar with GNOME or elementary OS design, the elementary desktop has always been horizontal workspaces. The Multitasking View zooms out, with a “system gray” layer underneath, and app windows are spread across the visible desktops with app icons badges.

GNOME 3 was vertical workspaces with a “dash” on the left for favorite and running apps. Open windows are spread in a grid on the empty space in the middle, with a dimmed wallpaper behind them. Workspaces were kinda tucked away to the right but not prominent by default.

GNOME 40 is switching to horizontal workspaces, and a familiar looking zoomed out view of workspaces with a system gray layer beneath. The dash is moving to the bottom. Windows are badged with their icons.
