The context: banners which say something to the effect of "by continuing to browse this site you agree for us to track you" are illegal. You cannot withhold services because the user declines to consent to your tracking garbage.Quoting the GDPR:>Consent is presumed not to be freely given [...] if the performance of a contract, including the provision of a service, is dependent on the consent despite such consent not being necessary for such performance.

@sir Aren't you in the US ? A lot of websites just ignore GDPR if you're not located in the EU

@raimu @sir was curious so I went out and checked with my Dutch IP. Needed to disable uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger for anything to show up at all, but they do give a GDPR popup with options to consent and deny.Still they shouldn't be tracking in the first place, and I find it shitty how denying consent is called "Save", but it looks like they are within the law here.

@raimu @sir nvm I take that back. They still connect to a fuckton of tracking domains even when you don't consent.

@raimu this is still illegal. EU law applies to EU citizens abroad, and there's no way to tell the nationality of your website visitor.

@sir @raimu it's only "illegal" if you are putting yourself into the jurisdiction of any EU member... otherwise how are they going to prosecute you?I'm sure that several countries in the Arabic regions have laws "applying" to the whole world that you may not talk about this or that or use a certain name a certain way... doesn't mean that any other country should care.A single nation simply *can't* (and should not be able to) make laws that apply outside of its borders. For that, we have global, multi nation conglomerates (nato, UN, etc)

@sir @raimu I don't.I care about the $#&@* cookie pop ups about as much as the next guy.Doesn't mean that I have to like the fact that the EU is overstepping their jurisdiction, even if I agree with the goal of this particular law.If multiple countries think that's a great idea we'll have incompatible laws all over the place, all of them "international" and you yourself said that it's hard to tell where someone is from based on the IP.what to do then?
