You know, anyone who collects vintage tech and genuinely cares for it, I'm happy for them, but the idea of having more than... let's say 2 CRT monitors just seems like too much to me

I mean there are two main exceptions to this and they are a) backups you keep in storage in case a monitor breaks, b) you have a lot of computers that you keep set up as a sort of personal museumBut both of those exceptions involve being able to have a whoooole lot of space so they don't count

I was gonna describe owning macintoshes as a secondary exception but, y'know what? If you own macintoshes you just need to rehouse them in a motherboard case and connect them all to a single monitor switch. I don't make the rules i just make them up.

I don't collect vintage tech... I merely accumulate #retrocomputing gear. It turns out I have 9 CRTs in my small retro room. And no Macs.I think about two of them are CRT monitors (monochrome, naturally). One is a telly. Or maybe two. And one is an oscilloscope. One's a Minitel. One's an #amstrad #pcw ... there might be a #vectrex in there. There's a #vt320 somewhere too.Oh, yes, and there is a colour CRT monitor too.https://retrocomputingforum.com/t/question-how-many-crts/1333@68km

@EdS my comment about mac's was more of a joke; obviously you have to have more of you have any built in displays (lump in an oscilloscope with that too).

@EdS If I'm honest, I do have:* 1 color composite monitor for my C64 and game consoles (frequently used)* 1 amber monochrome for... fun. I technically have an XT it came with but it didn't get used* 1 RGB monitor for my Tandy 1000 (frequently used)* 1 other RGB that is lower quality and I should probably get rid of* 1 8" monochrome SVGA monitor for fun* 1 iMacBut most of them *are* in storage 🤔Looks like I shouldn't be talking! Lol

@68km @EdS I have a couple of Commodore monitors, a CRT TV and an Sony Trinitron VGA monitor that covers most of my need. I keep it all mostly in storage and use adaptors and converters with LCD screens when possible, simply because I try to minimise my power consumption.I generally only break out the CRTs when I'm not sure if something works and want to eliminate complexity.

@mike @EdS I realize I didn't even mention it yet but my actual, non-joke opinion is that a bunch of CRTs just takes up to much space and weight! I'm with you, Mike

@68km @EdS yeah that too!I know some people have a nostalgic love for CRTs, but about 15 years ago I first realised I needed glasses after I started a new job and started getting headaches a lot. It came down to eyestrain from the monitors I was using - but it took a while to figure out because I had no issue with LCDs and the split was about 50/50 then.Dumped my home CRTs at that point and been using nothing but LCD screens ever since. So much easier on my eyes.
