Cell phones are on the next level of frustration in terms of configuring and really owning. Just being able to root a device, which is never default unless you buy a niche privacy phone often is a huge and painful rigmarole. The "community" of cell phone hackers isn't that helpful because most of them are concerned with making phones look cool rather than removing spyware and "empowering" users. Part of this is just the issues of manufacturers, designers and carriers of phones conspiring to keep phones locked down devices. All this makes using and doing videos on phones very difficult. My website: https://lukesmith.xyzPlease donate: https://lukesmith.xyz/donateOR affiliate links to things l use:https://www.epik.com/?affid=we2ro7sa6 Get a cheap and reliable domain name with Epik.https://www.vultr.com/?ref=8384069-6G Get a VPS and host a website or server for anything else.https://brave.com/luk005 Get the Brave browser.https://lbry.tv/$/invite/@Luke View my videos on LBRY. You have a higher tolerance than I do for technology which is designed to harm its users. Even phones of allegedly free design must still make concessions in order to play by the rules of the phone network. That said, I do not believe that you can place a price tag on freedom. Whether a truly free piece of hardware costs $100 or $1000 $10000, if it gives me an avenue to use digital technology in freedom I will pursue it.

it's true that it's a nightmare but i dont think it is because you cannot root tour phone. Android capability-based security architecture is not meant to be used with root access and so I don't like to root my phones: it's just using it the wrong way. I view this arch as the natural conclusion and integration of decades of research in computer and systems security. Not being able to uninstall apps however is just some gay googly bs that has nothing to do with this security arch. You should not need root access to be free in an android device, and I think LineageOS does this well.

Instead of going for a wig, why don’t you just buy a hoodie and put the hood on when recording in sunlight. You should wear your sunglasses, too. You know, in case you get blinded.

@z You know, I actually had my sunglasses lost (stolen) in the mail when I sent them in for repairs! I am too proud to get new ones since the old ones were Randolph Engineering and very nice.

@danoloan10 I actually agree. I want root as a failsafe, but the Lineage style of just enabling it in debugging and nowhere else is pretty much all you need for normal use. If you want to do "hacker" stuff on your phone, it makes sense to be using a computer anyway.

@danoloan10 @luke The smartphone I had used before switching to a dumbphone was a Jolla phone, which is really crappy hardware from like 2013 or so. I have it since 2015, because it was a meme around that time. However, it runs Sailfish OS, which is a somewhat crappy linux-based operating system, but it has a nice user interface concept (control by gestures instead of buttons) and, most importantly, it will grant you root access if you enable it. It’s also free of Google, which maybe has been the selling point for me. Unfortunately, the project seems itself comatose for a while and its eco system has never truly lived. There is an Android compatibility mode, but I have never turned it on so far as a matter of principle. Lineage OS still uses Google Play, no? Maybe /e/ is worth looking into … Anyway, it doesn’t really matter, I’m totally with you that smartphones are more of an annoyance, as practical as they can be.

@luke That’s sad to hear. They looked nice, too. If I recall correctly, they have been a Christmas present, right? Maybe someone from your family will get you a replacement for this Christmas, too.

@luke @z you can use lineage OS without google, in fact it is distributed without any Google software for legal reasons. Instead of installing Google you can go with microG and F-Droid and Aurora Store. for microG (a free substitute of gogle pkay servs) you will need painful extra tinkering as it needs to spoof the signature of google play services and lineage does not allow this by default.

I'm pretty happy with the pinephone. I'm not sure if it's ready for a daily use reliable device, but it is pretty cheap and I get to use DWM on a phone... Which is surprisingly more usable than any other interface I've used so far.Unfortunately, I do use google services for income so I haven't tried to use it as my daily driver.

@logen@9chen.org You must be using a keyboard, right? I can't imagine how you would implement any real window manager like DWM on a touchphone.

Hey, you could do much better with more efficient file compression. That 12 minute video is 560MB, which could be reduced by a factor of 10 (same resolution) without perceptible loss of quality. That would greatly help your storage and bandwidth costs.
