@twitter cabovers (called Lutons over here) are less common as you might need an extra driving licence category once they go over a certain size and generally only boomers have it (a leftover from Cold War and the possibility of conscription), but you can get a decent used VW California with DSG automatic transmission and all the bling inside for half that price here in the UK...

@vfrmedia @twitter the worst thing in the US is that it’s very difficult to actually get a good campera $70k Ford Econoline-based Class C (box stuck on the back of a body-on-frame van chassis) or a $400,000 Class A (fully coachbuilt) are the same horrific cheap materials (lots of cheap wood, including in the body structure) and workmanship (and is probably built in Indiana), just the $400,000 one has more bling (and therefore more to break)the Class Bs (“someone built this into a Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Ram ProMaster (Fiat Ducato)”) tend to be better just because more of the vehicle is left as delivered from the manufacturer, but it’s hard to find one under $100,000, and they’re smaller than a Class C, let alone a Class Aweird stuff (from the US perspective), and stuff above $1M is more likely to actually be custom-built by someone who cares, but there’s literally nothing that’s both quality and mass-produced in the US, so something like a VW Grand California (which would compete directly against the Class Bs) simply doesn’t exist - you can get something that size and with those features, but it’s literally twice the priceand something like a regular California… that’s a segment that almost doesn’t exist in the US other than tiny companies doing one-off conversions of small cargo vans and minivans, and people paying $30,000+ for rusty old 1980s Volkswagen Vanagon (T3 Transporter) Westfalias (and tbh, most of the US RV market seems to want something bigger than that)

@bamfic @twitter @bhtooefr TBH ready built campers are still pricey here so a lot of people convert vans, but if you got your driving licence after 1997 you are limited to 3,500kg total for the whole vehicle plus anything inside, unless you get a Category C licence which means a whole new theory + practical test *and* official medical check (which needs to be renewed every 5 years after age 45) and anyone who has cat C for work rarely has time for side projects..

@vfrmedia @bamfic @twitter Whereas here, you get 26,000 lbs on our equivalent standard driver’s license, and if you register it as an RV, most states have even higher weight limits as an exception specifically for RVs (and even allow you to drive air brakes without an air brake endorsement).

@vfrmedia @bamfic @twitter Different states have different rules for what has to be done to make an RV, but then you get shenanigans like this: https://jalopnik.com/my-bus-has-plates-because-the-vermont-dmv-is-secretly-a-1845700048(An article about exploiting Vermont’s willingness to register cars from anywhere in exchange for the tax revenue, to register a school bus as an RV in a more lax jurisdiction to allow time to do the build, before transferring it into the author’s own state.)

@TedIn the UK if its a smaller one and has some seats removed leaving 7 (+driver) and bringing the weight (including all passengers and luggage) below 3 500kg you can still drive it on a normal licence (I've seen a few VW buses including LWB models on sale with the claim you can drive them on standard European licence..)@bamfic @twitter @bhtooefr
