This week in KDE — Big accented/alternative character input feature: hold and press a key and a hint box with alternative similar characters pops up, letting you choose which one to use:https://pointieststick.com/2020/12/04/this-week-in-kde-big-new-accented-alternative-character-input-feature/

@kde Seriously? The whole KDE team really thinks this is a good idea? 🤦♂️Push and hold is not used in computers to reveal new features, that's only used in touch screens. And it's slow and painful.

@josealberto4444 @kde Seriously? How did you not realise it is an optional feature that can be easily turned off? Oh! Because you didn't read the blog post 🤦♂️ . And, yes, of course they are thinking of touchscreen devices, as unifying layouts and input across devices is part of KDE's interface development strategy.

@Bro666 @kde I had read the blog post, you stupid. There isn't a single mention to touchscreen devices in the corresponding section and, however, they talk about compose keys, that are mainly used in physical keyboards. Putting it as a default behaviour in computers is a bad idea, as the default options are the most tested ones for bugs. And, yes, fuck off.

@josealberto4444 By hurling insults, you have strengthened your argument. I am now convinced you are right.

@kde Seems like a weird feature to bring to desktop, but I can see it being useful. It's slower than the regular ways of typing these characters, but a lot more accessible to keyboard layouts that might not have keys for these accents.
