If you encrypt a hard drive but save the key so that you don't have to type in a password, isn't that a bit silly?

@kai As always, it depends on your threat model. If your threat model involves cops, then you always want at least one password for anything sensitive. If your threat model is more immediate, say, an abusive partner, it might be better to save a key on an SD card or something and pass that to a trusted friend.

@frostotron if the threat model is that I want to sell/donate this disk in the future and don't want my information compromised, then saving the key on machine will work. But if the threat model is, someone might just walk out of the building with this server under their arm, then keeping the key on the device seems especially vulnerable.Don't people worry about theft?
