Does anyone know a handy way to organize an online lottery? Something like a list where people can input their username that can then randomly be selected from. #halp

@Gina have them pick a number between -420 and 69e42 and use random.org?

@Gina we seem to use drawnames.de for that. Not sure if they are exclusive to Germany.

@GinaI use Framaforms to get the usernames then I launch a bash command to choose a random number between 1 and the number of answers 🙂

@Gina how involved a solution do you need? Simplest fix is to have somewhere that people can ‘sign up’ (eg a comment thread), which functions as your list of X people, and you can then run a RNG to pick a number between 1 and X (live-streamed to prove fairness, perhaps) to determine your winner.

@Gina a Nextcloud form will give you a list, then use $RANDOM, a simple script or a spreadsheet formula to pick one entryOr print them all out on little slips of paper and use the last one the cat knocks off the table

@Gina how trasparent or instant must it be? Because google forms, or any floss alternative thereof gives you a spreadsheet. From there, use a dice, random.org to pick a row. Or simply order-by-random that spreadsheet and pick the top. This is what we did at a large Dutch public broadcaster for our lotteries. Later we screenrecorded the steps.
