@Moon Who is smarter? Bill Gates or Toady One from Dwarf Fortress fame. I don't have the IQ numbers but I *bet* Toady One is the one with the higher IQ.And so I ask again who is smarter?I think that the right way to put this is that IQ is highly correlated to being smart.

@coolboymew @cereal @Moon This. When I was really little, I had my IQ test taken and got below average. My Mom was apparently in tears, but the tester told me I got everything "right" but it didn't answer the questions the "right" way.IQ tests are mostly logic based and never take into account other forms of thinking like creativity, spatial thinking, etc.

@cereal @xianc78 @coolboymew @Moon It's also heavily skewed, obviously, by a person's motivation to actually solve the various puzzles. Plenty of people I know are idiots *until* you frame a complex problem in the context of something they care about. Also, while the concept of IQ is just a little bullshit to begin with, I think we can better depict it by removing a digit, making it a scale from 0 to 20, with 80% of people falling between 7 and 13.

@r000t @cereal @xianc78 @coolboymew @Moon IQ tests are fairly scientific and interesting. They're meant to average over the curve of all people who take them. I think Peterson does the best explanation of them:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSo5v5t4OQM

@djsumdog @xianc78 @cereal @coolboymew @Moon ^ This also means that, ideally, a person's IQ falls over time, as the population gets more intelligent *around* them. But uh.... yeah fat chance of that happening any time soon.

@r000t @xianc78 @cereal @coolboymew @Moon It's still the most scientific and accurate measure of intelligence we have though, with the least variability. You will rarely if ever see someone with an IQ of 70 in a University, and if they have an IQ of 70, they're going to be slow. It's stuck around because it is a good indicator of life choices and growth.

@djsumdog @xianc78 @cereal @coolboymew @Moon It's the best predictor we have, and I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying that the entire population's getting fucking retardedbut also we should change the "display units". IQ in its current state imo implies a wider difference between any two individuals than really exists. I also think it'd put a stop to the "999999999IQ $thing" memes, making it more obvious it's a flat scale. literally just drop a significant digit. what's the *functional* difference between someone with 135 and 140 IQ?
