@Main_Tomato This is a difficult question as most of em have pros and cons.I like Discord because it's very easy to maintain communities on there and have different categories to talk in (to keep it clean) and built-in voice.Telegram? idk, I don't like that too much anymore.XMPP: it's a simple and straight forward proto but fuck me up the arse with all the extensions.Matrix: mostly the same as XMPP just without the extentions (but now the hassle of a slightly more complex protocol)

@Waces @Main_Tomato This is what I think as well. Is there an open source, privacy respecting group chat app that has as much functionality as Discord? I really like how Discord allows you to organize your server.

@Main_Tomato I like the variety of matrix' features but it's a bit complicated regarding the password/security/verification stuff. Jabber is nice and easy, I use it actively every day 😜

@Main_Tomato I don't really "like" Discord as a platform and the official clients leave a few features to be desired but it's where my friends are so I'm kinda stuck with itTelegram seems cool and Matrix is *ok* but I haven't extensively used either

I go Telegram for its 2 advantages:1. It is better than WhatsApp2. It isn't WhatsApp.I don't think I would want my family switch to Discord and I don't think I could get them to use XMPP or Matrix. Getting them to use Telegram which is very similar to WhatsApp in terms of both look and features is difficult anyway.I am not saying XMPP and Matrix are bad, they aren't. They can have stepper learning curve than Telegram for WhatsApp users.@Main_Tomato

@Main_Tomato I like the one that lets me talk to the people I wish to talk to. This is true above a certain usability threshold, below which I stop using the medium and become unable to communicate with said people. Ethics / philosophy is secondary to that.This is the same issue that comes up for all the different classes of tools. For instance with web browsers, if you value privacy / security *above* the ability to render a webpage, then the best security would be to not browse the web.

@Main_Tomato I like XMPP because it's decentralised, I can choose/run my own server, and...well maybe I'd have said #Matrix but it seems like the protocol isn't quite "there" yet :xmpp:I've been convincing my friends over, which is a slow process, but it's happening! ⌛
