I tried to switch over to android for a couple weeks, but I am just a basic bro that enjoys iOS too much. I guess I accidentally gave google the go ahead to track my every move when setting up my android phone and I got a report of them watching my every move. Kinda unnerving but was my fault. that seems very invasive

@barrett Wow, this is not cool even if you accidentally gave consent. And let's be fair, if you can accidentally give consent, can it really be called "consent"?

@barrett did you consider turning this feature off? It's actually very useful. Also, you could disable the GPS at any time to save battery and don't give apps access to your position. You could even uninstall the tracking app completely. Not everyone likes planned obsolescence, overpriced hardware, and limited freedom and options, some people care about functionality and ignore slick design. I don't like Google at all either, just stating facts and not expressing my actual opinion.

@barrett I joined the iOS crew when the new SE iPhone came out. I’m a basic bitch, and this phone does the job and leaves me feeling slightly less exploited than Android did. I still think android is nicer...I just wish it wasn’t a fucking personal life scrapper.

@cypnk @barrett To be fair, Apple is 100% tracking you, too, just not offering anything back for it. Your location data is too valuable to marketers to just let you keep it private.

@Hexman I did turn it off, I do like android too I was just creeped out by this. I am a mobile dev and can make more money building iOS native apps so I am kinda stuck in that ecosystem.

@barrett I'm using Google Maps on iOS, and getting such update monthly too. So, technically, it's not Android, but well, that's little difference...The useful bit of information from this: if you want to opt out, look in Google Maps settings rather than phone settings.

@barrett I understand your frustration. Unfortunately IT has eventually come to this licensingfees/bloatwared commercial crap.

@barrett I understand the sentiment, but real talk if you don't want location tracking the only true solution is to not have a cell phone. Privacy is dead, it's just a matter of who you trust with your privacy.

@Clifford @barrett I got the original iPhone SE, but after Apple had discontinued it and the price dropped to somewhere acceptable for me.And the reason why I got it because it was the only one small enough for me to use single-handed without my thumb starting to hurt.(Live in Finland, refuse to use Amazon, so Unihertz et al. are either expensive or hard to source.)

@barrett It's spooky how much goog and apple are able to infiltrate our lives if we aren't extremely careful!

@barrett Also, its not your fault, it is designed on purpose so that you are likely to make choices that benefit Google, not the user.

@barrett Curently the options are:- Become a nerd, root your Android device, install a customROM and a dozen privacy tools, while you play, learn and develop on your Poco-phone while waiting for https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/- Buy an e.foundation device- Stay in the un-free but less privacy violating Apple system- Give up, love BigBrother, use your Android device as you bought it.

@AstaMcCarthy @barrett Depending on what you want to use the phone for, there's also ubuntu touch that can run on several devices[1] I've been using UT since 2017 and it's good enough for my needs at least. It does what I expect from a phone, is stable, reliable, there's a good community...Another interesting option that's on the horizon is Volla phone[2][1] https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/[2] https://www.volla.online/

@barrett tracking is on by default specially about your internet traffic. take a look at Google Play Services' terms of service if you're curious.luckily, GPlay Services and most of the basic programs are replaceable depending on what you use.
