       @phil @fristi some people in my class managed to solve it using an equation with 3 unknown variables.The simpler solution you found is more about really strong logic skills, I wonder if they emphasise more on that in China 🤔

       @NekoSock @phil I think it's more a case of "don't think to hard about it" which is exactly what we would do, but a kid wouldn't.

       @NekoSock @phil @fristi @NekoSock All I know is that the height of the table (T), with the cat (C) and minus the turtle (Tu) is 170. So the height of the table must be 170 minus the cat, plus the turtle. Right?T = 170 - C + TuWe also know that the table with the turtle minus the cat is 130. So the height of the table is alsoT = 130  - Tu + CTherefore130 - Tu + C = 170 - C + Tu- Tu + C + C - Tu = 170 - 1302C - 2Tu = 40Now we know that the height of 2 cats minus the height of 2 turtles is 40 in total. But how tall is each animal?Tu = (40 / 2) - CTu = 20 - CSo... the height of the turtle is 20 minus the height of the cat. How tall is the cat?2C - 2 * (20 - C) = 402C - 40 - 2C = 40- 2 (20 -C) = 2C - 402C - 40 + 2C = 404C = 40 + 404C = 80C = 80 / 4C = 20The height of the cat is 20! Now, to get the height of the turtle:Tu = 20 - 20 = 0The height of the turtle is... 0?????If that's correct then the height of the table isT = 170 - 20 + 0 = 150

       @enigmatico @phil @fristi Correct! 🎉 💯 You actually can't know the height of the animals, because the equation would still hold true, even if they were, say, 10cm taller.

       @NekoSock @phil @fristi Yeah, well... I got really confused because I did it one time but got to the conclusion that the turtle was 0 before knowing what the cat was. So I thought that was not possible and decided to start over, this time solving the height of the cat first. It was very confusing, but the logic is easy.

       @NekoSock let cat, table and turtle be a, b, and c respectively.According to problem, a + b - c = 170 and b + c - a = 130.Clearly, we need another equation in a, b and c to determine the value of the three values.

       @NekoSock adding both sides, we geta + b - c + b + c - a =170 + 130=> 2b = 300=> b = 150Putting b = 150 in equation 1 and 2, we geta + 150 - c = 170 => a - c = 20150 + c - a = 130 => -a + c = -20Adding both equations, LHS and RHS become zero. The fuck? What went wrong here?

       @GNUxeava it may be because you can't know the height of the animals? Like, Look at the picture, imagine they were both, say, 10 cm taller, the equality would still hold upBut yes! It is 150cm!

       @NekoSock I gave up doing it the clever way and just eyeballed it.Got 10cm for the turtle and 30cm for the cat, making the table 150cm.Pretty quickly, too.Interesting that the heights of the animals combined is the same as difference between the two provided heights.

       @Paradox 150cm is correct!Actually, any animal height give the correct solution as long as they are 20cm apart

       @NekoSock Wait shit you're right.Well then this problem needs additional information, unless they're okay with puzzles that have more than one solution.Also I'm curious if there's an intended way to solve it or if they just give out this problem and say "go wild".

       @Paradox it actually only has one solution, although you can't know the height of the animals, there can only ever be one solution for the table, 150 cmI think the reasoning was this one:"Given image one includes the height of the cat and excludes the height of the turtleand that image two excludes the height of the cat and includes the height of the turtleAdding them together gives us the height of two tables without the cat and the turtle. We can divide this result by 2 to get the height of the table.170+130=300300/2=150

       @NekoSock I did forget about that. The other heights are not asked about.Also, it'll take me a bit to fully grasp the cleverness of that.
