in 2016 i got a computer from an uncle. for a while i used it for testing operating systems and stuff, but eventually it stopped booting, and in 2017 i put it on the attic. it's been sitting there...until now.

the problem of this computer was that it got stuck on the bios screen, clicked and wouldn't let me boot off USB. i think that the problem here is that it's trying to read from the hard drive, and that hard drive is dead, so it gets stuck. I'll test this by plugging it into another computer

@knuxify I don't know where you live, but in america, i could buy an SD to laptop IDE and then plug the adapter into the adapter, makes it a little harder since you'd probably need to find some sort of mountable solution to mount to the caddy, although some people sell a 3d printed caddy for it

@knuxify where i live it's actually about the same price to get an SD card solution than to get an old one. SD cards are about the speed of IDE, although if you go the CF route, CF is literally IDE, but there's a lot of weird things about CF and oddities that make it way more expensive

there's an utility that burns a bios installer onto a floppy, and that seems to be the only way to get the absolutely latest version. the only other one available is 2 versions older, but i think it should be fineand i'm not kidding when i say floppy, it literally just says "please insert a 1.44mb floppy into drive A: and press start". like, this particular model doesn't even have a floppy drive, and even if it did, i don't have any floppiesmaybe it's for the floppy-equipped versions. if not, there's definitively a way to trick it into putting it on a pendrive

nope, with the hard drive inserted it just keeps clicking and gets stuck. perhaps it's something about that drive unlock thing that's mentioned in the bios without the HDD inserted, because it sounds more something's constantly falling onto some plastici tried recording it but it sounds a bit different on the recording than irl

the only problem with this sata-usb drive enclosure is that it uses two usb connectors, one for power and one for data, because it's usb 2.0 and doesn't have a superspeed connectori might be able to work around this with a USB hub or by plugging the power cable into another device

i'm getting a bit bored of jumping through hoops to get this thing to boot anything, so i'll leave it at this. i'll see if i can get an ide-sd adapter so i can replace the hard drive (compactflash seems to be more expensive, besides i already own an sd card) and then i'll try to get something running on it, but until then, this is shelved indefinitely.

today i decided to clean the fans since there was suspiciously little air coming out of the vents. turns out getting into the computer was incredibly annoying (i had to take off the screen!!!). i was so annoyed in fact that halfway through i ended up forgetting to categorize the screws correctly so i didn't remember where to put what. til i am not good at taking things apart, who would've guessedalso there's almost no thermal paste between the cpu and the radiator but i don't have any so i couldn't apply it. will i do so at some point?... uhhh.... i'd rather not open this up again

suprise! i just got an ide to SD adapter!...only problem is, it's do small that it doesn't fit into the drive caddy, and it has no mounting holes. so to plug it in, I'll have to take this entire computer apart, and I wanted to test it with a microSD to SD adapter instead of a regular SD card too...

it works!! the bios sees the adapter and all 16gb on the sd card. i did have to take apart the computer but at least i didn't lose any screws this time lolanyways, i'm installing win7 now and i'll see how it performs. might throw xp and linux on there instead, idk

something fun i've noticed: there's a faint blue light shining below the "disable touchpad" button which turns off when the touchpad is disabledalso, fun fact about this computer, the touchpad disable/enable button is right above the touchpad! imo that's really cool

the installation is taking an awfully long time for some reasoni thought it could've been because the dvd i used was dual-layer, so i used a regular one instead and nothing changedlike, the "expanding files" thing jumps up by 1% every *minute*. i'm hoping this isn't a problem with the sd-ide adapter

I'm hoping this is just some kind of bios misconfiguration or driver issue and not the adapter being broken

the manual adjustment option requires you to input stuff like cylinders which isn't really a thing on an ide to sd adapter

update: i replaced the 16gb sd card with a 64gb microsd card in a sd-microsd adapter. windows 7's extracting files step now takes only about 15 seconds for each %, not 1 minute like the previous card

the graphics card appears to be an ati radeon igp 340m. unfortunately it's too old to work with windows aero and the control panel does not start up on windows 7, instead throwing an error about "known compatibility issues"

anyways, i got all the drivers installed, except for the modem driver because it throws "the device is not configured properly" messages in the device manager, maybe because nothing's plugged in. not like i'd be using it anywaysalso the network driver might not work, when i tried it on the slow install it just said "unidentified network, no connection"

while we're waiting, i'll mention a few fun tidbits:- this is currently the oldest working computer in my collection! it's also my only x32-only machine, and by extention, my only pentium 4 machine- this is my only computer with printer and serial ports- the computer came with at least 256mb of ram preinstalled, and i know this because the 256mb stick had a "replace with compaq spare" sticker on it- did i mention it has an odd configuration of 512mb+256mb of ram, because it was upgraded at some point of its lifespanmost importantly.it has AN IR BLASTERLITERALLY IT HAS AN IR BLASTERidk what i'll use it for but INFRARED TECHNOLOGY

also, i'm quite sure there's a floppy-equipped version of this laptop. there's an empty slot only accessible on the inside of the computer with a weird, relatively small connector, blocked off from the outside by a plastic dud, and i think that might be the floppy drivefun fact: i do not own a single floppy disk reader, but i do own a single floppy disk (and found about 5 more on the attic with Some Business Data on them, but i didn't take them downstairs because i didn't need them for anything, besides i don't have a way to read them)

the floppy disk is some kind of driver disk for a wireless mouse. i remember i tried it the other day on my uncle's old computer and it just said it was x64. why would an x64 driver be on a floppy disk out of all places? the world may never know

another fun tidbit: remember how i mentioned that i got this laptop from an uncle who got it from another uncle?well,1. i don't actually remember exactly where he got it from, but my mind tells me he got it from my Uncle From The Netherlands2. i was given this computer because the uncle had recieved YET ANOTHER computer from YET ANOTHER uncle3. the YET ANOTHER computer from the YET ANOTHER uncle? was the travelmate. which i also have. this time i took it myself, but he was fine with it bc he had the dell vostro 1540 i gave him a year or two earlier and he was using that as his main pc (and still does!)4. i had two dell vostros because one of them was my sibling's. mine's still in working order and it's the one that is currently downloading windows xp updates

ok, so today i decided to install windows xp alongside win7. unfortunately, partedmagic decided that the drive had a broken gpt partition table (which would make sense as this sd card was used by a win10 on arm install) so i had to wipe it.the new plan is to install windows xp and linux
