@dankwraith so I was thinking I'd try to get into traditional fighters, so a while back I picked up (on a recommendation from a friend) ACA NeoGeo The King of Fighters '98 on Switch. As a team-based game, many of its characters are individually simple, and the controls feel less stiff to me than Street Fighter. But you know what that version of KoF '98 doesn't have? Training mode. I have no earthly idea how anybody actually gets into this genre

@fool @dankwraith you just have to have been into them since you were a kid. starting to learn how to play fighting games as an adult is basically impossible. the only way to do it is to have the bizarre mix of persistence and free time that all children possess.

@fool @dankwraith it's a lot like chess in this way, and also in the way that there's a lot of specific terminology and concepts you have to figure out and people who understand it will always be like "oh don't worry about that, you just have to know X" and X is different every time

@prophet_goddess @dankwraith I've picked up a lot of the fundamentals from various places, both in terms of control and tactics, but I've never gotten the muscle memory. And I'm not just talking about command inputs, but even just the intuition of what the simple moves are good for. Probably this is just a matter of access to indulgent teachers, but I think that a fighty game, even one not deliberately simplified, could include effective pedagogy in it.

@fool @dankwraith most fighting games these days have a training mode, and some of those training modes (skullgirls, the granblue fantasy fighting game) are "quite good". but it's the double edged sword of being extremely complex and insanely boring to teach. you only get to have fun once you already know what to do. it's like the first couple months of learning to play a musical instrument, only absolutely nobody is impressed.

@prophet_goddess @dankwraith Even musicians have etudes. In fighting games I've heard of, for instance, teachers using drills or limited sparring - saying something like "I'm only going to use these two moves, you try to beat me using only normals." That's the sort of thing you could automate. Imagine a massive series of training missions tailored for many scenarios, presented in logical order, with gamified scaffolding like a checklist or daily rewards for completing it.

@fool @dankwraith yeah i mean that's basically what the granblue fantasy fighting game training mode is. the only downside is having to play a fighting game based on granblue fantasy

@prophet_goddess @fool @dankwraith plus it has trash netcode. Fightcade has really good rollback netcode. If you can find a friend to learn with it helps getting into it. My fav is Vsav, really good old capcom game that was trying for "accessibility" in its own way. One of the first games to have a "magic" chain combo system, also one of the first games with air dashes, every character has some unique movement options, combos are mostly easy and the game is very fast. {it also has amazing character design, animation, stages and music} https://www.fightcade.com/
