i’m hearing whites use the term “latinx” SO MUCH this week, even as hispanics respond with “latinos” in the next breath. i really wouldn’t even comment because idgaf about cultural appropriation, but just... lol. 1. hispanics already mildly salty (the sjw ones) about the fact that their primary language is a colonizer language forced on them by spanish conquistadores 2. i can anecdotally attest that while hispanics don’t give a fuck about the -x suffix, some of them DO NOT like being called “latino”... they say, “i’m not latin. why call me that?”2.a.) “latino” comes from “latinoamericano”.. latin america again being named, if i recall, by the french, to refer to the new country european romance language speakers (languages derived from latin).. so there’s colonial influence 2.3. now the valiant USA, in an attempt to remedy this injustice, has added their OWN arbitrary colonization to this title and bastardized it even further by adding -x and literally making it unpronounceable in the native language.

@meowski well, the word “culo” is masculine, but it’s always masculine regardless of whose culo it is. but i think a better word would be culón (m) or culona (f).. which literally means “fatass” but is used as a term of endearment for people with a nice butt xD ey, culona, ven y perréate aquí cerquita de mí 😎

@Lumeinshin it is interesting. and honestly, i interchange which one i use.. i try to use hispanic more than latino precisely because (hispanics) HAVE told me they don’t like the term latino. the only “bad” part about “hispano” is, again, the root is “spanish” and “that’s not our native language reeeee” but it’s a small group of people who actively complain about the term. really like.. if they’re all offensive, then what do you want me to do? xD

@colonelj @Lumeinshin mmm.. i know people who use both. definitely people who use hispanic. i hear “gente hispanohablante” often (again, “spanish-speaking people”) but i swear i had this exact conversation with my coworkers and i said, “okay so if you don’t like latino, what should i use?” and they said, “i’m mexican. call me mexican.” xD but that’s like referring to texans. you still need a term to refer to americans as a whole. and they told me they prefer hispano in that case.

@colonelj @Lumeinshin i don’t really see any evidence that spanish-speakers who don’t speak english don’t use the term “hispano”.. only that it started to be used in the US in the 80’s and then in the 90’s they switched to “latino” because suddenly hispano was rayciss.. idk what to tell you; anecdotally i’ve found it is very much in use. even online playing mmo’s and stuff, spanish-speakers sending server messages “buscando gente hispana” all the time.

@theblessing @meowski Most of those promoting indigenous languages are commies closely associated with public universities. I'm actually not against the idea since languages are cool, but the people behind such language "revival" want to make you think (or rather, not argue against the idea) that those languages are in no way less useful or important than either English or French (it's not like you normally find a job asking proficient Nahuatl lol). Also they, being commies, are more interested in the destruction of the Spanish language than actually promoting the indigenous ones, hence all of that "x" and "e" as a means to avoid the gendered nature of Spanish.

@theblessing when I descibed it to the family, the parents (whose English isn't great) had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to pronounce it. Even the son, who speaks English well, didn't understand it. Shit, as a native English speaker, it makes my head hurt.
