This is the entrance of KAGRA, the gravitational wave interferometer that detected the black hole merging event a while ago.https://gwcenter.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/

It's technically a telescope, but it's located 1000m underground. Its two arms at 90 degrees can detect the expansion in spacetime caused by a gravitational wave passing through the earth.I believe you need two of these detectors in two different places on earth to see the wave in 3 dimensions, and measure its direction.#physics

The detectors are located in a cave 1000m underground to shield them from muons from space...

They were mounted all around a cistern containing 50,000 tons of pure water. This is a photo of the exhibit in the museum, not the real thing detector. There are onky a few dozen lamps and two mirrors facing each other to create the illusion of an infinite vertical wall.

An animation on an impressive cylindrical screen explains how detection works: when a neutrino "hits" a water molecule, it emits an electron or positron which moves faster than the speed of light *in water*, producing a tiny flash of Cherenkov radiation seen by the photomultipliers. #physicshttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super-Kamiokande

Neutrinos are incredibly elusive particles which normally travel all the way through our planet and even through the Sun as if they were transparent. The Super-Kamiokande was made huge to increase the chance of observing an interaction every now and then. #physicshttp://www-sk.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/sk/index-e.html

@loke I'm more fascinated by the engineering side than the research. How do you read 13,000 sensors? How do you deal with the constant failures and spurious detections? How do you do the "bring up"? How do you test software updates (since there's only one production environment and no test environment)?

Thanks, @Poudingue. I wish Mastodon has an explicit UX for editing, publishing and viewing "stories".Threads sort of work already, but they're harder to discover for publishers and for readers. What do you think, @Gargron?
