If you ever need bidirectional synchronization, check out unison. When it works, it's great, but it's a little rough around the edges. In particular, it's extremely sensitive to version differences between servers. It really wants both parties to use the exact same version which is annoying.

@luke sftp is great for ad-hoc / interactive file copying / downloading between boxes. Also you get it along with an ssh client install
