My Xiaomi Mi 5s is close to the end of its working life. Its battery capacity was ~83% when I checked it a few months ago. The screen has started to burn-in, telling me it has aged poorly (despite my bias for lower brightness). The phone was bought new in 2018.I now feel it is time to buy a new phone and do away with my iPhone as well.My go-to is the Pinephone. I'm not worried about the 3GiB of RAM (4GiB would've been better) but the A64 sounds underpowered and the IPS screen would kill the battery quite quickly. I want to avoid Android but I don't think it's so much of an upgrade considering its drawbacks.I'm thinking of buying a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 as it's officially supported by LineageOS. As we live in Unprecedented Times™ I have to be able to run Android apps like the NHS COVID-19 one.Have you had a similar predicament? What would be the best thing to do?

@thatbrickster i bought a blackberry keyone refurbed for about £160 quite happy with it, although aside from light usage and for work i dont use it much, i hate touch screen keyboards so thats the main reason i got iti wasnt aware at the time but it has a locked bootloader so i cant install eOS or lineage or anything like that, though the blackberry version of android does let you "disable" apps, replacing the google ones with their factory versions and disabling them, ofc i cannot say for sure how disabled they are but they appear to be as far as i can telli had heard of the fairphone but only in passing and it didnt occur to me when i was looking for a phone to look into it, but i think perhaps if they do a new one in a few years and i start having issues or my blackberry dies i will get one, my focus for that sorta thing i think is moreso on laptops and that kinda thing, where i personally will get more use and have more interestunless the pinephone gets a physical keyboard, then i'll be interested, tho i'd rather they did a pinebook with a trackpoint+buttons lolonly thing i dislike about the blackberry really is the lack of replaceable battery, its a bit weak in performance but i dont feel it in general usage@georgia helped me pick better software for 'muh freedoms' and they all work fine, i had issues when i had just turned off the google services for example with the stock messages app where it spammed "gib perms pls" for texts, tho it worked anyway which was spoopy

@thatbrickster I feel like now's a bad time to buy a phone, because I expect Android smartphones to feature full-fledged PC modes in the next few years. Samsung already does it for a few years already, with Samsung DeX and their docks, but I never tried it out myself.I'm myself interested in something like the Fairphone, but it is quite expensive for its specifications. I wish there were more phones that would cater to niche audiences who value repairability and privacy.

@Lumeinshin One thing that I look for when buying a phone is support for de-Googling, i.e. Can I run other ROMs like LineageOS? Are the kernel sources available?I was set on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 as the LineageOS guys have official support for it. It's £125 plus whatever UK Customs would charge me.Then this morning, Xiaomi dropped the price of the Mi 10 Lite within my £200 budget. I bought it earlier on the basis that it will get LineageOS somewhere down the line. Hardware-wise it has everything I want except the screen size (I wanted sub-6").I did look at the Fairphone but I can only see that being an option for those who have an Android 4.x device or those looking to buy their first device with ethics in mind. The Pinephone, including delivery and sales tax/VAT, was not only over £200 but despite it coming from a Poland warehouse some in the EU have reported getting hit with import duty. Not to mention the software ecosystem isn't yet up to par (you can run GloDroid on it in the meantime) but at least I can say the confirmed keyboard accessory is a clam-shell one rather than the sliding one originally proposed (it was mechanically difficult and expensive to do).@georgia

@okabe_rintarou The PinePhone comes with a dock if you buy the 'convergence edition' of the device. The PinePhone may not have been my next phone but my current phone's specs are 4 years old and it's ageing poorly (it has minor screen burn in the two years I've had it despite my bias for lower brightness).I hope we do end up with desktop-class Linux phones within this decade. I'm not going to say years because proprietary vendors want to keep it for themselves.

@okabe_rintarou I did look at it from YouTubers and while it might be okay for those used to the Apple way of doing things it doesn't offer anything special that upstream LineageOS doesn't already provide.I hope RMS doesn't judge me too harshly when I end up in purgatory.

In the end I bought this. https://www.mi.com/uk/buy/product/mi-10-liteAt £199 (inc. VAT and 'free' delivery) it's the cheapest option around. Buying from China would've cost ~£30 more plus import duty. It has an AMOLED screen and a Qualcomm SoC, making it likely to receive LineageOS support at some point. I promise to look after its battery better than I did on my current Mi 5s. Don't need to worry about the bootloader as Xiaomi already allows me to unlock their devices. It doesn't fully respect my freedom in that it has firmware blobs and that MIUI is the only official choice I have right now. I will replace it with the version provided by xiaomi.eu as it removes a lot of the bloat it comes with.

@thatbrickster Microsoft's 'Continuity' isn't really a Desktop Mode, correct? Regardless, I don't know much about it and I would never buy a Microsoft product for ethical and privacy reasons, except their gaming consoles since I'm passionate about gaming. Also, I mixed up PinePhone and FairPhone in my last message, sorry about that. I wouldn't buy the PinePhone right now because it's more intended towards developers and I doubt I would ever consider buying it as long as there's no Android variant available for it.

@okabe_rintarou Continuity was a way of taking what you were doing on your phone and, when docking it, would open the session up as if it were a desktop session. It was basically a Windows ARM desktop but without the Win32 userland. As I mentioned in other threads, PinePhone has GloDroid available as a way of using Android on it. Anbox can be unbearable at times.

@thatbrickster Still, the Pinephone isn't yet ready for normal consumers, correct? Anyways, I'm hopeful we'll see development on that front over the next few years. I'd love to just dock my smartphone and quickly do some light stuff on it at the end of the day without booting up my PC.

@okabe_rintarou >the Pinephone isn't yet ready for normal consumers, correct? That's right. The wiki says it was made for 'hackers and tinkerers'.>I'd love to just dock my smartphone and quickly do some light stuff on it at the end of the day without booting up my PC.Proprietary phones these days are capable of being desktop replacements. You'd need to find a way to work around the limitations of having no optical media, etc. but so far it has been an underutilised feature. More people are interested in playing PUBG and gacha crap on phones than actual work.

@thatbrickster Underutilised indeed. I still can't believe barely anybody cares about Samsung DeX. To me, it's a killer feature, and it seems Samsung thought so at the beginning to, but it's not even mentioned anymore despite being there in the background. What a shame. There's even a way to run a linux distro through it and, if one wants to go down that rabbit hole, run Steam and Proton.I'm sure it'll be popular with enthusiasts in the future, I know I'd absolutely love to have it.
