Very interesting PINE64 update this month. A LOT of happenings packed in the blog post but a couple of the most exciting to me things were the upcoming Pinephone addons and the possibility of the "Pinecom" handheld device. I have been looking forward to a keyboard attachment since the very beginning and the Pinecom could be very neat. Its basically a shrunken and less expensive Pinephone without a modem. https://www.pine64.org/2020/10/15/update-new-hacktober-gear/

@kelbot I'm curious about this line: "Manjaro’s build closest to end-user ready yet; ships with Phosh"I wonder if that's true for PineTab as well. I'm running Mobian on mine, but they're both using Phosh. Is Manjaro a better choice in the long run? Also, I was looking at the cube, but seriously $30 to ship a $29 item? I realize there's a cheaper option, but Wowza.

@kelbot "I’ve been working towards setting up an EU store" that's actually quite promising for me. :)"I’m also happy to let you all know that 3GB/ 32GB PinePhone mainboards will be available in the Pine Store in November. If you already have a PinePhone and want to upgrade to the higher capacity and RAM variant, you don’t have to buy a new unit – just the mainboard. "Is also quite promising from a future-proofing standpoint.

@kelbot Action packed! I like that the author called out the naysayers who w are missing the point about the Pinecom. My forum post was one of the few encouraging them, it's discouraging when people want to make everything about them

@mike I'm not sure what is going to be best in the long run but it sounds like Manjaro has gotten to a pretty good state and certainly appears to be getting a lot of dev work. Manjaro have also been working on a plasma mobile spin but I think they were kind of forced to go with phosh for their community edition pinephone OS because its just more mature at this point. I'm rooting for plasma mobile to get more complete and stable.

@mike Yeah, the shipping options are a little frustrating. I think its just tough for them because they are shipping to so many different countries and working on small enough scale that they aren't getting any sort of bulk discount to lower the shipping prices.

@kelbot the keyboard for the #PinePhone is also something that might eventually make me want to get one once the whole product matures (especially OS-wise)."The keyboard section also holds a large (probably 5000mAh) battery, which not only more-than-doubles the phone’s stand-by time but also acts as a weighty counterbalance." sounds like a wonderful choice for my usual usecases.(Though since it doesn't run #Android(?), I guess it won't have #PokémonGO eating up its power ;))

@FiXato Yes! Once the OS options are more mature and the accessory boards/back plates and keyboard are available it will be a very versatile device. I really liked that bit about the mainboard upgrades and also that they are planning something special as a thank you to the early adopters that want to upgrade (ME!).

@pagrus Absolutely! It just makes me shake my head when people respond with negative remarks because they completely miss the point of the device or it just isn't something they would use so they think it shouldn't be made and nobody should have one. Like, huh? How do you read your own post and not see how self-centered you are?

@pagrus I think the Pine64 folks are pretty level headed and good at looking past the nay-sayers that just miss the point and can't keep their mouth shut. Here's hoping at least because I think it would be great to have a leaner and even cheaper handheld device like that. Shoot, with all the various SBC+small display projects I've attempted to hack together over the years I would have bought a sub-$100 professional looking device like that in a second.

@kelbot @pagrus I'm one of those naysayers who won't keep his mouth shut, at least about the PinePhone, which I think is a flawed idea in the first place (as a former Neo1973 owner). However, Pine64 makes great ARM SBC boards, and their PineBook Pro laptop seems like a great peice of kit-- would have bought one if I didn't already have the ThinkPad x301.

@bamfic @pagrus I mean its fine to think its flawed or not want one or whatever. But telling Pine64 that they shouldn't make it is a bit too far IMO.

@kelbot @mike let's hope when they get the distribution centre up and running in Europe it will cheapen the delivery even possibly to the USA . You never know they might get one over there too eventually. I haven't tried plasma yet , but then again I've always liked gnome so phosh is fine for me . I haven't tried Manjaro either as arch seems to be pretty good really . I've not had any major problems so far .
