Why do DNS servers exist in the first place? Wouldn’t it be easier to set up caches in the devices where the ip address are stores in the device itself. Otherwise, if it fails, it defaults to a search engine’s ip address. Or am I thinking of this all wrong?

@Logical_Error words are a lot easier to remember than numbers. If an IP address of a server changes, you still have the domain you can use, just change the A record (the domain to IP address entry) DNS also allows us to host multiple sites from the same IP (as many who self-host do) and there's a whole slew of benefits to DNS that outweigh the efforts

@brandon @Logical_Error It's still interesting, that computer (DNS) can work with IP numbers, but not with alphabet - domain names ...Why it has to be translated to numbers?

@blackrat @Logical_Error The devices on the internet, and the sections that each of them lies in, are segregated by subnet. The various sections (subnets) in public addressing are/were sold to companies including ISPs, private companies, and more and in order to know where in the world to send a signal, you need to know which subnet to send toTopics to look up:* Subnetting* Routing* Domain name routing

@brandon @Logical_Error so is it just a business or technical limitation?I don't see a reason why it can't be an alphabet - a domain name directly without any IP address previously sold from fictional institution to some corporation.

@brandon like DNS servers know, that IP #.#.#.# is on that place, it can know that domain name abcd.eu is on that place.

@blackrat Please read up on IP addressing and subnetting. There's math and small electronics involved. Please read up on DNS, there's history behind why it's necessary

@blackrat You're not going to make very many friends here if you continue arguing with folks trying to help answer the questions you're asking.

@Logical_Error How would the search engines find things without DNS?

@Logical_Error @ataraxia937 While DNS is definitely needed, there are alternative mechanisms, most notably the hosts file. You can also have a local DNS server that acts as a local cache (and also lets you setup custom domains only available locally).

@blackrat @brandon @Logical_Error If a domain name were used directly, it would still be routing on a number, just a much larger, arbitrary-length one without as many numerical patterns that are stable in time and space. While it might be possible to create a scheme like this using modern hardware, it would be much more complex and hardware/memory intensive than our current system.Routers are already expensive enough as-is.Also, you would probably have many temp names like user53589.att.net

@blackrat @brandon @Logical_Error You'd also get some of the fun problems of DNS injected into routing. Like think about what it takes to reassign a domain name today, now your routing addresses would have that management problem instead of just DNS.

@blackrat It's kinda irrelevant which one looks better when they mean the same thing thanks to DNS.
