       I mean I'd joke about barely having the energy for one family, let alone two, but men having secret side families is only possible because of the hugely disproportionate distribution of household labor and the social & economic inequality of men and women, so.

       @ljwrites So if your husband helps with household labor and makes less money than you do, then he’ll be too worn out to cheat on you! It’s the perfect plan!A lot of people like to say it’s evolutionary, where women can all have offspring at once with a single man, whereas men can only have offspring one at a time with a single woman. I’m skeptical of that, since if males always had multiple partners, then a lot of males would have to die without reproducing. That expends huge amounts of resources and puts more stress on the females who might be giving birth for no genetic gain if it’s a boy. So there’s selection pressure either way.If I was the Grand Poobah of the universe, I’d make it so guys don’t want to share, but girls don’t want to stick with the same guy. So you’d have 5 females on one male, and 5 males rotating into that one male’s position over the fertile period of their species. Actually I’d make magic real, so the kind of cruel compromises we must make in reality wouldn’t happen anymore.
