Picking on ACB here with maybe an unpopular opinion. Does anyone question how a woman can be a feminist icon simply because she has 7 children? I don’t understand in this era of modern birth control and sterilization why you would do this to yourself. I know the answer here—she has money, and staff, and people probably getting get those jobs after taking time off to have children. Also I assume that women who are having that many children for the sheer joy of it vs women who are very religious are few and far between. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/09/27/amy-coney-barrett-supreme-court-nominee-feminist-icon-422059

@classybitch I wonder about this! I don’t want to police what people do, but it’s like, even if you don’t care about the environment, most women with that many kids, that’s their whole life taken up. In an odd way I feel like I have an obligation to use bc because there’s so many women who don’t get to choose.

@Gelatinousrube @classybitch A mother of six I know pushes back against the idea that her family is harder on the environment. One example she gave is she uses the same bathwater for three of the little ones. Clothes and belongings are handed down not only among the siblings, but through their community. Their house for eight people is smaller than plenty that house half as many. Whether for a sense of stewardship or from financial necessity large families tend to be frugal. There are valid concerns about large families but I think she makes a fair point about their use of resources. Some women do seem to thrive having more than three children. Having a higher income and supportive people helps of course!Agree entirely that it is awful for women to not be able to choose how many children to have, If any, and when, and under what circumstances. Societal pressure and religious beliefs play a big part even when contraception is available. (Natural family planning is much improved from decades ago.) It is equally true for women who may have only one or two children if not freely chosen. Expectations of motherhood have lessened but still exist for many.

@Hibiscus @Gelatinousrube the single worst thing you can do for the environment is to have kids, because they will also have kids and all these people need to consume

@Hibiscus @Gelatinousrube @classybitch if her kids eat, shes using 4x the resources of a 2 child family, not to mention the waste created (sewage treatment uses resources.)I suspect she knows she made a choice that isn’t viable with the statw of our environment, which is why she’s defensive over it. I’ve met the same type, except the one I know has 10.
