To any senior software devs that might see this; What are some requirements you have for junior devs before you'd even think about hiring them? What are some skills you'd really like junior devs to have but aren't strictly a requirement?

@holot I think, like, just the basics, you know? A little familiarity with a language or two, a demo or two.I think most companies, though, they just tick off bullet points.

@holot having a budget and time to hire a junior dev is the first thing I think about :comfyuwu: More seriously, I'd say being able to write code in the language we use, being able to implement some basic stuff, having at least some even most basic project behind your back or some code you can show. This pretty much covers it.

@newt @p So the requirements are really low?Basically can you set up the most basic of websites, if that’s the job, can you do basic database stuff, can you actually *use* a couple languages?

@holot @p again, it depends on what position you want to apply for and what that company does. If that involves making websites, then yeah, I'd say that probably covers it.However, consider this. Nobody hires junior devs because they want junior devs. Junior devs are hired because they are expected to cease being junior within a few months, maybe a year tops. So the main thing you are expected to do is learn. Also, in many areas it is a lot quicker and cheaper to find a junior dev and train him or her than to find someone with actual experience. Yes, even it takes several months.

@holot @newt Yeah, caring about learning is more important, you just kinda figure out what someone's useful for, it's impossible to predict for a junior dev.
