       Getting the seasonal influenza vaccine today a d noticing that the H1N1 (swine flu) is still around after 11 years.Will the #COVID19 virus ever go extinct, even with massive vaccinations across all countries?

       @codewiz I think it might depend on the mutations? Also, I read that H1N1 has had several strains, it was also responsible for the 1918 influenza pandemic (Spanish flu). Then again, I heard some dutch epidemiologist say that an effective vaccine for ALL flu viruses is feasible if the needed amount of money and time is spent (he talked about 10-15 years).

       @tagomago Well. Looks like humanity should make an investments to eradicate deadly (or even just annoying) diseases as soon as possible, so we stop losing worker productivity and medical resources dealing with them every year.But even when it's the most economically rational strategy, somehow our species can never come together and commit to do it. Local interests, selfishness and shortsightedness always result in a dumb, uncoordinated global response 😞

       @codewiz @tagomago all flus being eradicated would be amazing. Maybe Rona will be the catalyst to move us there

       @nickchuckwalter @codewiz It was famously achieved with smallpox in 1980, which had recurringly plagued humans for at least 2,000 years.

       @tagomago @nickchuckwalter wow, is that figure correct? Did the US really recoup the investment of eradicating Smallpox every 26 days?So I wonder... what would be the economic cost of eradicating #COVID-19 with social isolation alone? What if we had a 100% effective vaccine that needs to be inoculated yearly to enough people until the virus is extinct?

       @codewiz @nickchuckwalter Yeah, it's what the Wikipedia source says:https://www.cgdev.org/sites/default/files/archive/doc/millions/MS_case_1.pdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox#Eradication

       @codewiz @nickchuckwalter Yeah, that same figure is what the Wikipedia source says:https://www.cgdev.org/sites/default/files/archive/doc/millions/MS_case_1.pdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox#EradicationSo, sure, I guess covid-19 makes for a perfect eradication candidate. Nothing can be more expensive than the countermeasures and damages that we are going through globally.

       @codewiz @nickchuckwalter @tagomago It seems like COVID-19 is mostly killing off the unhealthy, obese, and elderly.It's not up to the task, I'm afraid! ;)
