Random reminder that you can't free people from oppression by rebuilding the systems so that you end up on top.

Eugen replicated Twitter's oppressive system with just some small adjustments so that he and a few others could be on top.And that's why the Fediverse is failing. Rome didn't fall in a day, and neither will the Fediverse, but the Fediverse *is* falling, and like Rome, it's falling of its own accord.Gab may have been successfully cast out, but all it'll take is one outside influence from an authoritarian left-wing source to make it crumble into a neonazi hellhole.

Oh, and just to be clear, the "you can fork" only applies to those with the technical know-how, and "host your own server" only applies to those with the technical know-how and the wealth to be able to do that. It's not as simple as installing an app. There's no easy way to fork or host.Eugen created new software, but didn't create it in such a way that it could be easily used *and secured* by anyone.Roman citizens saw the corruption of the city of Rome and the suffering they were enduring because of it, but they didn't have a solution other than to wait for someone to take advantage of the corruption in order to topple the entire thing. The Visigoths took advantage of that corruption to lay siege to Rome and turned the fall of Rome into a freefall. We can't wait for the raid against Mastodon to happen. The structural weaknesses are already there. Block evasion is easier to do here than on Twitter. It's not gonna be hard for those with the means and wealth to act on their hostile intentions to harass much of the Fediverse into abandoning this already-sinking ship. And the attack will come from inside the house, just as the Visigoths used to be loyal slaves to Rome.

We can speculate all we want about who the saboteur is gonna be, but the truth is, it doesn't matter. The fact is, we can see it coming, so if we truly cared about the Fediverse, we can change our chosen path.It would require radical changes to ActivityPub and the software that uses it, rendering much of the old stuff obsolete for the new system, but we *can* change if people are willing. The problem is that people like Eugen who have the power to change this stuff already have their's, and they have no desire to change things. So unless all the non-admin folks here wanna get together and make something new, the Fediverse is doomed.

And since we're already in our little cliques, unwilling to criticize our own and only provide protection *from* it, we'd say that last part also isn't gonna happen.Good riddance to the Fediverse, I guess. It may not have been lead poisoning that took it down like it did for Rome, but the social poisoning has definitely been quite the experience.

So, yeah, the Fedi *by its inherent nature* regarding accessibility of hosting one's own server is only going to ever be populated by people with relatively more wealth. And since marginalized folks -- especially marginalized folks of color -- generally do not fall in that category due to discrimination outside the Fediverse, it's literally impossible for us to fix this mess.Rather than build a piece of software capable of being installed and run on any system with a simple click of the mouse...And rather than build a community that encouraged helping to fund others that needed their own servers...Eugen, and by extension, everyone else here just gave up and let the inequality fester without even trying.Likewise for every other layer, from rejecting accessibility features to actually fixing the ActivityPub spec so that a block means they're actually blocked. And so we're paying the price of that replicated system of inherent hierarchy.

@KitsuneAlicia As an aside: this really speaks to the potential of a platform like Scuttlebutt, where ever user is their own instance

@MadestMadness Except everyone being their own instance is only half the equation. We also need community consensus when it comes to blocking out bad actors. And that's *much* harder to accomplish.

@KitsuneAlicia @MadestMadness I'm still here because I like the people that i'm federated with and the people on my feed, but I have zero confidence in the platform anymore.
