@khm I used to race, but I haven't been on the bike in two years. Comparatively, my best bike is low tech compared to modern machines. It's still made of metal (titanium) and I don't have disc brakes.

@Ricardus I rode the same bike for ten years, and decided I wanted to try disc brakes. So far it's been a stark education in the importance of standardization. When I raced, I raced aluminum (and it was the 90s, so that was high-tech) but all my bikes since then have been steel, including the one I'm building now. Someone might make a carbon bike for a 6'6" person, but I sure can't afford it.

@khm I hear ya. I'm 6'3" and I am usually good with the largest frames the manufacturers make.So you're welding your own frameset? What kind of tubing? You have a frame building jig?

@Ricardus This one is an off-the-shelf Surly frame (in 64cm size). It is very much in my plans to start making my own frames. I have designs on a frame jig, but covid increased my job workload sufficiently that I haven't had time to pursue it.All my welding experience is automotive so there will be a protracted learning curve for this adventure.

@khm My Ti frame is 62 center to top IIRC.If you ever start building frames that is definitely the kind of thing you should photograph and show. Lots of people would enjoy that.

@khm There's a great rider from Ithaca named Glenn Swan who used to build frames. In his day he could have hung with the pros. He was FAST. Now he has a shop and he is still very involved with cycling.

@Ricardus if I could pull the eject lever on my current career and open a bike shop I would do it immediately. I'm pretty sure the area I live in couldn't sustain the kind of weird-ass bike shop I would run, though. Maybe by the time the kids finish school I'll have sufficent framebuilding experience to make it work...

@Ricardus I have family there, and spent time nearby when I was in the Army. The locals refer to that side of the Cascade mountains as 'the wet side', as opposed to where I live in 'the dry side' -- mostly steppe and desert, fading into the pine forests to the north and east. We get almost no rain, so it's great for motorcycles and bicycles.

@khm are you building a bike from parts?? When I bought my first road bike recently I thought I wanted to do this until I realized how non-standardized everything is. We need a PCPartPicker like service for bike parts.

@dvdt Sheldon Brown's website was the best resource for this stuff while he was alive, but it hasn't been updated sufficiently since he passed. Disc brake mounting "standards" and electronic components are pretty bad. Up through about 9-speed, everything is interoperable as long as you stick to a brand, but past that it's a dumpster fire. Shimano now uses different width freehubs for 11-speed road and mountain cassettes, for instance. I could write a book, there's so much wrong

@khm any specific performance criteria you are looking for when building yourself? I haven’t been riding long enough yet to have specific complaints about my CAAD13 that aren’t better solved by me losing a few or twenty pounds 😅

@dvdt I'm out of shape and not looking to return to racing, so "fun to ride" is paramount! To this end it's turned out to be a pretty relaxed kind of touring posture...

@Ricardus krav maga is very effective but difficult to study. a lot of the civilian schools are very "performative" because realistic training is dangerous. one of jiu jitsu's advantages is its focus on submission holds, which are effective in the real world but still give the practitioner a chance to ease up before damage is done. krav maga is explosive and conclusive.
