Along with claiming to be trans or intersex or millions of other things, has anybody else noticed the prevalence of people claiming to have “misophonia”? From my research it seems this isn’t a diagnosable condition at all, though it is recognised as a thing reported by many people. Medicalising irritation and short tempers seems kind of hilarious to me.

@ChameleonBones My best friend has it. Like with other disorders that aren’t ‘visible’, there’s lots of pretenders and munchausens, plus misophonia IS trendy now. But it legitimately is a thing, and very crippling. The people putting it in their twitter bios will 99% be just people who don’t like some sounds or want attention, but misophonia goes beyond that - pretty much the same with stuff like OCD, BPD, or even schizophrenia.

@Wildebeest I don’t know if the diagnosis is accepted anywhere else but it’s not a thing in the UK at least. That’s not to say I don’t believe it affects some people (like your friend) in a similar way to how autistics often have to avoid entire situations for fear of being pushed to meltdown. I’ve heard about self-described misophones even skipping meals due to disgust and fear of others’ chewing sounds, which is something I’ve very occasionally had to do as an autistic person, so I do feel for her. Sadly 99% of the people I’ve met who claimed it were just attention-seeking.

@ChameleonBones Yeah, it’s not a legit diagnosis anywhere as far as I know, which makes it extra ripe for people to self-diagnose, obviously. I do think it’s something along the same neural pathways as autistic, or ADHD, sensory difficulties. Unfortunately, it remains in the realm of under-researched, so there’s no help for it (also a + for those attention seekers, they’re Crippled Forever). When my friend came to stay over, I could watch her struggle to put up with my noises until she had to storm out to hide in the other room in shame and anger. It’s pretty terrible. And made no easier by liars.
