One of these days, I'm going to make the jump to #wayland, but it turns out it's not going to be today.I thought I'd go halfway, and at least get the home server I connect to running Wayland (for when I access graphical programs on it, which I do pretty much every day). But, after playing around with it a fair amount today, I'd decided that the bspwm/tigerVNC stack is just a much better fit for that usecase than saw/wayvnc – a shame, because I really *want* to like the latter stack.Someday!

@codesections It's had some growing pains, and there's been some weird stuff on my end but at least locally wayland has been treating me well

@brandon > It's had some growing pains, and there's been some weird stuff on my end but at least locally wayland has been treating me wellYeah, I'm probably doing it wrong™ by trying to use wayland via a remote connection before I even give it a fair shot locally – I know that hasn't been the focus yet.But I just enjoy #stumpwm too much to give up my X11 local desktop yet! Sway seems like a great i3 replacement, but i3 isn't in my top three WMs for X, so it's hard to be too excited by that

@codesections I love how when I look up stumpwm, DistroTube's video pops up and he says it's "possibly the most frustrating window manager, I've ever used"

@brandon > I love how when I look up stumpwm, DistroTube's video pops up and he says it's "possibly the most frustrating window manager, I've ever used"Ha, I haven't seen that – I'll have to take a look and see what they're gripes are.I used to have some stability issues, but that was a year or two back; the past several months have been clear sailing. And, other than those crashes, I haven't run into anything I'd describe as frustrating, so I'm currious

I switched from KDE Plasma on X11 to Sway/Wayland about 9 months ago and have never looked back, having never used a tiling window manager before. I'm a bit lucky I guess in that everything I use regularly seems to work pretty well. I'm absolutely loving it, and have very few issues. When I started a new job in June that let me choose a distro, I ran Kubuntu for a bit, but ended up installing i3 because I missed Sway so much. Still using Sway at home tho.So I think I'm a bit unusual in that I started my tiling experience in Sway and then starting to use i3, haha.

@brandon @codesections I've recently added support for virtual input to `hikari` so things like `wayvnc` should work there. Of course `sway` had it before, but that's a given ^^.

@brandon I thought it was reasonably interesting, and helped clarify what I like so much about #stumpwm: it's much more built around keyboard *chains* than a flat namespace of shortcuts – that is, you tend to press one key to open up a group of commands, and then press another key to select a command from inside that set.Narrowing things down sequentially like that is a *great* fit for the way my mind works; it's also exactly what the guy in that video didn't like.

@brandon > Oh, and if I'm not mistaken [chaining keyboard commands can be] done with both i3 and sway well, with modesYeah, it be, and I've played around a bit with that. I never got it to work in a way I was super happy with: scripting the bindings felt a bit clunky, and there wasn't a way to have in-progress chains display the currently-available bindings. (I admit that's more of a nice-to-have than an must-have, though).Maybe I'll give that another try sometime

@brandon @codesections What do you mean? You can go right from greeter to emacs, yes. You can even startx -> emacs if you want. EXWM just adds some wrapping to emacs to complete the setup.

@nathand @brandon > EXWM just adds some wrapping to emacs to complete the setup. As nifty as that is, though, it does mean that anything that causes emacs to hang (rare, but not unheard of, ime) also causes your whole WM to be unresponsive

Lately, I've done the same thing with a custom #bspwm config that just launches a single app in monocle mode)

@brandon @codesections Doesn't prevent you, no, but typically monocle mode hides other windows (save floating style windows, like dialog boxes). Some of them do a replace action...
