@Gina @dada Na, just kidding, they are (slowly) migrating their COBOL code to Java (I donโ€™t know what version but I suspect 6 or 7).

@framasky @Gina @dada If youโ€™re more into sysadmin stuff, you could learn AIX too. There are still a loooot of Oracle-on-AIX setups out there (in public administrations, banking and payments systems...).Or develop some network skills, with some BGP youโ€™ll rule the world ! :)

@Gina In my opinion, if a company want certified people to keep up with deals they have with suppliers and/or clients. Then, they are usually keen to help you get them. But if they do require certs as a pre, chances are they are either rushing to hire or not that much clever (HR is not IT). And then you better not ending up working for them.

@Gina experience > qualifications! I think most (decent) employers care more about drive, experience and ability to learn than qualifications. At least this is what I've experienced!

@Gina certs are just used as a way to sell you to inexperienced companies. Consulting companies pay certs to their employees to win contracts, negotiate alliance with (cloud) companiesyou dont even need an IT education to succeed in this field. Is you learn fast, can think, gain meaningful experience and result, it will beat anyone with 15 years of work history who never became competentIf someone requires certs and does not pay, run...

@Gina A long time. Most of it's junk. AWS, Azure and GCP aren't hard. If you understand what you want to build and how *that* infrastructure works, it's boils down to putting the LEGO together to make it work. Yes, AWS calls their storage S3, whereas Azure calls theirs Blob and Google calls theirs ... well, no one runs their shit on Google's dumpster fire.Fintech, the industry I'm in, does absolutely use those tools though.

@benoitj yeah I see it a way to get a foot in the door at a possible next job. I don't have a classic IT background so I def need something to back up my experience.

@Gina as an IT manager I have never hired anyone based on certs or a lack thereof. Demonstrable ability to solve problems and understand documentation is what sets people apart to me, and no cert has ever guaranteed those traits to me.

@Gina certs don't replace experience. simply chase the experience. and don't coast if you're interested in your craft.
