@RMW why do you think that money that goes to Wikipedia goes to Wikia?

@mala It is indirectly, but it will fund that.Anyway I will add two links to the page instead. I know about the Wikipedia problems from Xah Lee. He used to edit Wikipedia, but no longer. This is the link about that: http://mywikibiz.com/Top_10_Reasons_Not_to_Donate_to_WikipediaThe second link is from Xah Lee. The article should be updated soon.Anyway, I would suggest to donate to people anyways.

@RMW that “mywikibiz” site gives is mostly about topics that happened nearly a decade ago. I’m not saying that there aren’t reasons for not giving to Wikipedia but it seems a weak example to assert so definitively. What in those links is it that leads you to believe so strongly in this example?

@mala There are many other articles of 2020 which say the same. Many scammy things often don't change their mindset soon. I would rather ask why do you think that it is not true? It might not be a fun thing to hear, but many things are scams.I would prefer to donate to something of which I am sure that the money reaches the right people. There are tons of good things and people, to donate to, so why guess? If you don't believe me, try to build your own opinion about it.

@RMW Why do I think it is not true? Because it's undeniably false that Wikia gets money from Wikipedia; and if you want to accurately describe the situation *now* you can link to articles that talk about 2020.Getting facts correct doesn't even affect your primary conclusion, which is that you think you should donate to people, not organizations. Maybe you correct it by stating how confident you are in your statements.

@RMW also, i think it's fair to ask why I'm so cranky about this! I don't usually correct people online!I think it's because it threw me out of your argument a bit to read an explicitly wrong statement when I was looking forward to your conclusions. Like I have some criticisms of Wikipedia, but Wikia isn't one of them! Also, let's be fair -- I work at an organization that could only work if folks support it, so there could be some bias there also. Though honestly, not as much as you'd think

@mala Hey, I don't blame you. It is good that people try to do good things. This is another article. It again isn't super new, but ehm. It is better described than some newer ones.https://wikipedia-sucks-badly.blogspot.com/2015/10/jimmy-wales-quest-to-profit-from.htmlAnyway, the whole wikipedia thing is pretty complex. It is hard to say what's true. I actually like it when people correct me. (I am a logic over feelings type of person)Anyway, I heard the following things, but don't take my word for it:

@mala Amazon is a sponsor of Wikipedia and let people place links there. Money was handed behind the scenes. Much stuff was secret and that is how Wikia got money of Wikipedia or something like that. It is complex so I don't expect anyone to believe it. I don't have a source either, but ehm, I think that it safe to say that some shady things happened. Here is another link of that site from before: http://mywikibiz.com/Criticism_of_Jimmy_WalesIt is just weird. I personally don't want to support it.

@mala and yes, the Wikia thing is no longer on my website, but I kept some other links.I don't want to push false information, but Wikipedia is complex. I don't know enough of the story.

@mala and the EFF has cool goals! I surely like the ideas behind some organisations. I just like to dig into some stuff before I would donate.

@RMW that's absolutely the right thing to do! It's really hard to tease apart truth from opinion though. Every org that I've worked with has had criticisms, some valid, some weird and way off the mark. One thing I try and do is to explore smaller, local and/or narrower orgs. Your ₿€$ will often go further.I disagree with not telling people -- it inspires others to give too.
