I wonder if something like #GrapheneOS will ever have comparable functionality to iOS. I know #CalyxOS gets closer via MicroG, but MicroG is just too buggy in my experience with it. Also, I wonder what it will take for Android developers to reduce dependence on Google services.

@hund @turtle21 an automated app installer store, network location, push notifications for starters.

@hund Video relay apps don’t behave well on it, no encrypted equivalent to “Find My,” notifications for various other apps don’t work (protonmail, for example), and some apps don’t work at all. I understand the reason behind the last two issues, so I’m not placing total blame anywhere; just wondering if it is pretty much what it’s going to be.

@projectmoon @turtle21 1. They don't ship a store for security reasons.2. What is network location?3. Push notifications works.

@hund @projectmoon push notifications do not work for apps relying on GCM/FCM. For others that do not have that requirement, they do indeed work. Not totally the fault of the OS (especially since they’re trying to put distance between themselves and Google), but a felt minus.

@turtle21 What is video relay applications?"Find my phone" seems like it would increase the attack surface a lot for very little added value. If some developer choose to rely on Google for notifications, which is stupid, and if you then use a Google free phone you can't complain about it not working. You should bitch on the developer for making poor choices in life. :)

@hund @turtle21 the question was what was missing, not why something is not included. An app store is apparently planned, but needs to meet their standards. Network location is where the phone can approximate your position based on other data, like unified NLP or Google fused location. And push notifications certainly do not work unless Graphene runs a notifications server. Apps often have a persistent connection fallback though.

@projectmoon @turtle21 I haven't had any issues with my phones not knowing where I am without any Google services.I have also used applications for years without any Google services and some "notification server" from LineageOS and I haven't had any issues with not having any notifications.

@hund @turtle21 the phone still has GPS. but that only works outside and takes time to gain a lock. And the apps you use probably either have polling or a persistent websocket fallback (Signal for example does this).

@hund video relay apps are apps made by companies that allow Deaf/hard of hearing sign language users to place calls through an interpreter. Find my (phone/friends) being encrypted on iOS does very little to increase attack surface but adds immense benefit for my group’s use case. I am not sure whether or not an equally secure/private implementation exists on Android, but I haven’t seen one.I agree about nagging developers to change! Wish there were some way to actually make them do it..
