So far, I think I could use this Macbook to do some light text editing but nothing more. Even that's a stretch, though, because I can't fucking stand the keyboard.

@amolith Which year of MacBook? FWIW, MacBook keyboards are what saved me from bad RSI problems. Most laptop keyboards are bad.

@amolith A lot of the web developer consultants that I work with prefer using a Mac for Angular/React/Vue/etc development over using Windows for the same.Personally, I'd use Linux for this type of development, but if my only choices were between Mac and Windows ... I would also pick the Mac.

@tomosaigon It's the 2017 MacBook Air. Quite honestly, the only keyboards I've felt that are worse than this are the ones on my two friends' gAmInG lApToPs. Both my 1st gen Chromebook and cheap HP laptop were better imo. How do you think it saved you from RSI?

@kcoram Between Windows and Mac, I really have no idea which I would pick. I haven't ever tried to do any real work on Windows but having a UNIX env a couple keystrokes away out of the box is a big point on Apple's side.Between Mac, Windows, and Linux, Linux wins every time hands down lol

@amolith @kcoram Personally I prefer the actual Mac operating system over Windows, but I prefer the application availability of Windows over Mac. Linux is the best of both worlds.

@robby @kcoram That's kind of where I'm leaning right now. macOS itself is much better than Windows. However, I do feel like Linux is just superior in general. It has more applications and tools than I'll ever need that do exactly what I want and nothing more. The only thing it's missing is game support and that's why I dual-boot Windows, however infrequently :<

@amolith If a laptop doesn’t have a trackpoint that’s literally a dealbreaker for me at this point.

@amolith @robby I totally agree. Happily, things like Proton and Vulkan are bringing more and more games to Linux, so I have less and less of a need to worry about keeping Windows for gaming.Converting my family to use Linux instead is a challenge, though. . .

@alex I always hear people talk about the trackpoint but it just felt awkward to me when I used it :thonking: This was years before I was interested in computers though and I didn't actually try to get used to it

@amolith Once you use it you never go back. You can keep your fingers on the home row at all times and still use a mouse. It’s much lower effort.

@kcoram @robby Yep. There are only a few games in my library that just don't work with Linux/Proton or that I haven't invested enough time into getting functional. I think the last time I booted into Windows was a week or two ago to play Destiny with a friend of mine :blobthink:Converting my family was the easy part. I just said "mom, I'm going to install elementaryOS on your laptop!" :blobthinkingsmirk:

@alex @amolith I was really close to getting the Lenovo ThinkPad-like desktop keyboards when getting new ones recently.https://www.tex-design.com.tw/us-en/products.php?act=view&id=87 looks nice but a bit to0 pricey. (Especially since I'd need two).

@bkhl @alex I've seen those a number of times and always thought they were cool but much too expensive. My ergodox has a mouse layer that works nicely though 👌

@amolith the butterfly keyboard is a war crime. The previous type with scissor switches is really nice, though, and they've gone back to scissors in the newest model.

@lightweight I'm planning to find an X220 somewhere and put Coreboot on it. I have a few Raspberry Pis and I've heard they're excellent for flashing SPI chips 👌

@amolith a friend of mine just bought one of these: https://www.lenovo.com/nz/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge/ThinkPad-E14-Gen2-AMD/p/22TPE14E4A2 and he's very impressed by it... and the Ryzen CPU looks... wow.

@amolith the keyboard on my last MacBook Pro is fucking annoying. It was already in the service to fix some keys. My XPS13 is really pleasant and randy

@amolith @robby @kcoram 70% of my Steam library has native Linux support and I have many hundreds of games there. Most of the rest is still playable using Proton.

@amolith I have an 8 year old x230, very happy with it but been looking forward to the day that it doesn't boot anymore so I could get something new but that's the thing with thinkpads, they rarely break...

@amolith I'm not sure if they changed the keyboard for your model like they eventually did so my experience is with older MacBooks. The keyboard just had the ideal amount of travel depth although now feel mushy (got used to XPS).What really helped with RSI was the MacBook touchpad.I have a cheap HP Chromebook and the plastic is falling apart but it's got a decent touchpad as well. I can't spend a lot of time typing on it though.

@amolith my lappie is a secondary machine; I primarily use a desktop and on my laptop I ssh/mosh to my desktop or a server if I need something powerful. Given that, price is a major factor. The ideal laptop is either cheap or lasts a long time. Old thinkpads fit the bill, but......I also watch anime on my laptop with real-time upscaling, so good video decoding and Vulkan support helps with all my upscalers (e.g. Anime4k). This disqualifies most old computers with poor support for decoding anything better than H.264. I'd like to be able to play vp9/AV1 rips off YouTube (yes, lots of YT clips are AV1 now. Thanks, youtube-dl) without having my fans spin up to the max.The second constraint throws out any old CPU/GPU. Nvidia is obviously out.My best option rn is the Mechrevo Code 01. It's been rebranded by Slimbook, Tuxedo Computers, Schenker, and others. Unfortunately, it's pricey ($800-$1500 depending on the seller and configs). I might just get a Pinebook Pro instead.I'll just use my free 2013 HP Elitebook until the screen falls off. Been chugging along for 7 years without a problem, the only exception being video decoding.

@Seirdy my use will be more of less the same as yours except I don't really need upscaling on the laptop. For my PC, I'm already looking into Anime4K 😉 The main thing about a laptop I'm looking for is keyboard, battery life, and price with option to flash coreboot a big plus. The X220 fits my needs fairly well and they typically go for ~$200 on eBay
