Shake my smh that people are getting pissy about date formats but not how messed up the calendar in general is12 months, just becausesome months have 31 days, or 30 days, or 29 days just whatever I it feels likeWeird ass A.C.E. and B.C.E. split where you have to count years backwards after a certain date7 days weeksSolstices and seasons fall on random dates in the middle of months around the 19th-22nd instead of being the thing that starts/ends a month

@ocean Also days are not 24 exact hours, so every 4 years we need to add an extra day to February. Why February? :akko_shrug:

@ocean Twelve months because lunar cycle. Month derives from "moon" and it makes about 12 rotations per year.Months have different days because the lunar cycle doesn't quite align with the planet's rotation about the sun.BC/AC is a fair criticism. 7 day week is also a religious holdover.Solstices are based on the min/max length of the day, but I don't know what equinoxes are based on. Anyway, seasons don't start at the beginning of a month, prolly a combination of Roman fuckery (which is why March isn't the first month as well) and the fact that basing a calendar on multiple natural processes is very messy.

@Paradox >Months have different days because the lunar cycle doesn't quite align with the planet's rotation about the sun. Then we shouldn't use lunar cycles to define months then right?7 day week is one of those things that has no real reason to exist but it has a huge hgue huge impact on daily life

@ocean There's a lot of things we probably shouldn't do, I'm just telling you how it be. XDThe sun and moon have always been culturally significant because they're really easy to see and change a lot, so it made sense to tie our timekeeping systems to those changes. Now that the world mostly relies on quartz vibrations, we could eventually transition to a more metric time system. I think France actually tried that, but it never caught on.Something about 100 seconds in a minute, etc.

@lilium @enigmatico To be fair though any calendar is gonna struggle with the odd number that we naturally get on Earth

@Paradox @ocean The Revolutionary Calendar is great! Still 12 months, but each has 3 weeks of 10 days. The leftover days at the end of the year are just holidays. Each day was 10 hours of 100 minutes, and of course each minute is 100 seconds.

@esheep @ocean The problem with that day cycle is it's 100,000 seconds, while the usual is 86,400. Your day will be out of sync by about four hours and change.Unless you redefine the second to be a bit shorter. I'm gonna need a watch that keeps track of that for me, though. The year cycle I'm fine with, I think. Seems gucci.

@esheep @Paradox Also the fact that they still use 12 months in a 10s based system is actually gonna drive me mad

@ocean @esheep I mean we can only do so much. The decimal system is never going away because it's too ingrained in society.Nature works better on different bases. If we had 120 sec/min and 120 min/hr, the day would cleanly have 6 hours. Then we could have 12 months with 30 days, with five days and change left over.Basically I've heard that 12 slots in better with many natural processes.
