@djsumdog @ultem an å is a small river. an ø is an island, but the spelling is old fashioned, from danish, and øy is used these days (but still exists in place names such as Tromsø and Vadsø). the oe in Faroe Islands is of nordic origin and we call them Færøyene, where -ene is the definite plural suffix. same goes for the Orkney Islands and other places ending in -oe and -ey.

@djsumdog @ultem also, i read somewhere that York used to be Jorvik. vik is of the same origin as Viking, and means a bay. i think the vikings would use it as a verb, “to go viking” (baying), and maybe later as a noun (but here i speculate) referring to people who went on such raids. clearly, all norse people weren’t raiders, so this would’ve been kind of a special interest or something chieftains looking to expand their territory would engage in.

@ultem @thor How many words with one letter do you have in Norwegian? In Swedish there are three obvious ones: i, å and ö. With a controversial à included.
