On the newest models of BMW, the car will obligingly display a long list of open source software and their licences when requested.Given the price of the cars, and the nice profits BMW makes every year (around 20 billion US$ in 2019), maybe we should ask them to kick back a few percentage points towards the software they use?How about other car makers?

@ParadeGrotesque I remember reading something about an Open Auto Initiative (I just made that name up, but it's something similar ot that). Might be best to check on the site for that particular initiative and see if BMW and others are members or involved in some way.

@ParadeGrotesque Didn't they say that you were going to have to pay for a subscription to BMW Plus if you wanted your fancy features like seat heaters to keep working after the 3-month free trial period?Screw those guys, like, with an oil rig.

@ParadeGrotesque A quick search shows they were a debconf sponsor a few years back and I think they've done quite a bit promoting their use of Linux.

@ParadeGrotesque Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) also are quite heavy users: https://moba.i.daimler.com/bai-cars/ba/foss/content/en/pdfs/FOSS_License_C-Class_205.pdf1744 pages of software licenses! They even have this - enter the VIN, get the licenses: https://moba.i.daimler.com/bai-cars/ba/foss/content/en/licence_agreement.htmlAbout #BMW as a automotive company: they sell total crap. Think about them as the worst parts (inabilities, management failures, dumbing down customers and so on) of Microsoft, Apple, Google, Oracle all merged into one. Examples:1) try to find BMW that handles better than small hatchbacks: https://www.youtube.com/user/km77video/videosHere is for the Ford Fiesta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynkQCkBvXQs2) "Fixing" a $100 000+ cars with a cable ties? Ohh, yes: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2018/RCRIT-18V473-2843.pdf (page 5 have a picture)3) Mess up the construction of straight-6 engine? Ohh, yes. (the straight-6 is "easy" because of some physical properties of its principal construction and it is a very old and proven design). https://youtu.be/GVavSEqSRs8?t=3491 "where is the hone of the cylinder liner" (the diagonal lines that we are able to see on the cylinder wall linings). https://youtu.be/GVavSEqSRs8?t=3031 - the crankshaft support is intentionally engineered to be weaker. So it is guaranteed that the engine eats itself. The aluminium bolts I'll NOT even comment :)
