I got a wierd flashback today when I had a conversation with a newly hired sysadmin at a hosting company. It was his first job in IT too and he really had that mentality that he knew the best and "other people and companies are stupid for not doing x".I just remember how I was EXACTLY like that when I got my first Linux-job at a hosting company. Shame on me.

@selea my first sysadmin job was the worst nightmare you can imagine.I was a Java developer, thought it would be easy to do Unix sysadmin.I got two weeks of training, then I was the only sysadmin. We had Irix, Solaris, SunOS, AIX, redhat, and we hosted the websites of several major league baseball teams.Months after I was fired and the company folded that last sysadmin asked me who was running the monthly billing scripts. That was the first I heard of them.

@seleaIt might be a bi-effect of beeing the first job as you want to prove that you where the right choice to hire and try to prove your self to more experienced peers

@selea you're good. I had that attitude in life. Well, live and learn.

@selea I had a good manager who proved me wrong in the very first 2 assignments - deploy a #RubyOnRails applicationwith #AutoScaling and to shard an already schema-defined #MongoDB database. And this person was so very good that they never gave me any direct answers. They only gave me pointers and asked me to figure the rest out myself. If I'm any good of a #SysAdmin today, I'd give all of that credit to that one person.

@selea that nightmare lasted six months, it's hard to summarize that much insanity.

@shapr I can image, I think :)I just read that you are running _exotic operatinsystems_ and I kinda gets blind of it. But being the sole sysadmin with that kind of responsibility? no no, must have sucked"
