In this world of soydevs writing open source npm for everything, with each passing day, the issue is less and less whether software is free libre and open source and more and more an issue of what kind of programs are being written in terms of quality and extendability.WEBSITE: https://lukesmith.xyz 🌐❓🔎DONATE: https://lukesmith.xyz/donate 💰😎👌💯OR affiliate links to things l use:https://www.epik.com/?affid=we2ro7sa6 Get a cheap and reliable domain name with Epik.https://www.vultr.com/?ref=8384069-6G Get a VPS and host a website or server for anything else.https://brave.com/luk005 Get the Brave browser.https://lbry.tv/$/invite/@Luke View my videos on LBRY.https://www.coinbase.com/join/smith_5to1 Get crypto-rich on Coinbase.

Another area that FSF can work on is raising people awareness about the free software - even though there is a free alternative to everything, only us nerds use it

@luke God, it really makes me wonder how many decades it's gonna take before we move into the libre hardware side of things. No, I'm not talking about Librem, I mean 3D-printed boards and chips and basically homebaked compoopers you can watch cat porn on or whatever.

@luke I can’t believe I’d say that, but yeah I agree with you.Mainly two things remain: 1) Telling (trying to convince ) normies about free software and eventually eradicating proprietary software2) Software with modular design that almost everyone can edit._“The freedom to NOT run the software, to be free to avoid vendor lock-in through appropriate modularization/encapsulation and minimized dependencies; meaning any free software can be replaced with a user’s preferred alternatives (freedom _4).”_– Peter Boughton

Stallman's expulsion from the FSF should serve as a warning to other organizations: beware the snakes you let through your doors. The Libre Planet conference was a huge red flag when they put extreme emphasis on being a safe space and nearly half the talks being held were about gender, inclusivity and other non-technology subject matter.

Preambule: let's hope this comment is not too long for the dopaminergic cucks out there.Midway through your dichotomy, you splashed the soyword "ethical".Let's define ethical: if ethics are an individual moral, then who cares about one using, crafting and sharing ethical tools but the person.I think libre software is broader than "ethical", it's not only about the inner virtues of the object and its relations with its users, but it's about a very historic political goal. A materialist one. As in historical materialism. But if it's not "ethical vs practical" ; then what is this moral idea ? RMS promotes "freedom". Except Freedom can materialize through a multitude of shapes."Freedom" is as vague as the soywords "ethical", "humanism", "progressism", "whateversoundgoodism" newspeak crumbs.I think RMS defends Freedom in reactance to a specific type of enslavement which has emerged each time in History, when a new way of public power emerged. When writing became, only the educated ones, the scribes and other literate could harness the power of previous generations knowledge aside person-2-person transmission. It was a sort of primitive knowledge capital only a few owned and shared. When printing was, its power of public knowledge was kept by the wealthiest. Kept or sold under the lock of "intellectual property", an abberation we mostly know as "copyright". Sold, because it kept the poorest away. Sold, because it kept the relative higher ground for the owners through economic profit. Sold, because you required to work in order to get access to public knowledge, which kept you enslaved from the rentiers. So let's go back to the question of the moral:Freedom == who owns who.Is the user owning its tool/data/capital, or is he owned through/by the tool/data/capital.In your rants, you rise a light on an aspect that requires more digging: complexity (you call it bloat).Complexity is the new copyright.Complexity removes the power from the users, just as being literate was required for writing and reading.Like you, i think the FSF/copyright battle is somewhat over. The giant owners shifted the battleground to the complexity terrain. The best current and proto-danger example of this is "A.I."Who will own the data, who will be literate enough to preserve its/his freedom from its complexity ?Nota Bene: drive safe, buckle up because you never know which fauna might cross your road.

@mind_aint_right@video.ploud.jp I'm trying to find the nearly half of the videos you mentioned on their mediagoblin instance, but I can't: https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/tag/libreplanet-2020-video/?page=1Which doesn't mean I didn't find *some* videos related to the topics you mentioned, so or I'm a complete SJW for some reason now and my mind thinks many of the videos hosted there are not about those topics, or I'm dumb, or they are lying using not related titles, or you are lying. I think the correct option is that I'm dumb as the classical stranger internet user is always right. Now, that doesn't mean I don't agree with nearly half of you comment :). Maybe also with nearly half of the rest.

@inigo@videos.lukesmith.xyz It might be nearly half an exaggeration. Still, I maintain that their focus on the subject matter is disproportionately high. Whenever there was a block of talks with nothing of interest to me, I found myself riding out to Boston for some grub.

I feel this decay of free software movement after free software became the mainstream (or in many ways even the norm) is a perfect example of hijacking uncle Ted described in Anti-Tech Revolution: Why and How. The most important goals of the free software and "open source" movements right now have to do with race, sex and other such matters and most people who identify with the movement are more than willing to discard any demands and goals having to do with software freedom in case they are a hinderance for these new goals. Perfect demonstrations of this is the characterasssasination of Stallman PBUH. Very few people ever tried to research what he was being accused of let alone read what was actually said by him. This immediate dismissal of anyone who dares to question the accusations makes it very obvious that free software movement is no more and the organisations that used to belong to it are now nothing but fronts for communist movements.

@mind_aint_right@video.ploud.jp There's no other way to prevent this shit except standing up to these types from the get-go and refusing to "be nice". In the tech world nobody cares about your personal traits if you can code, but of course that's not good enough for trigger-happy fucks who need to be pampered constantly. My hope is that new foundations and software makers emerge outside of the cancerous SJW bubble that engulfed the libre world.

@justice210@tube.tchncs.de I've used Windows and liked it until it became a pain in the ass to use even for simple tasks (talking about W10 in particular), that's when I decided I needed a functional OS and tried Linux, gaining an appreciation for its freedom along the way. Linux is not the most functional, in fact I need to jump through more hoops than usual to do certain tasks, but ironically it has become more functional than Windows.

@baguetteYou can't really fork an org like you fork software. Besides there seems to be very little point to it anymore as there is not much more to accomplish. Of course you could say that hardware is still very closed and proprietary. But it can't really make any significant progress until you can overcome the fact that there aren't many companies with proper foundries and the skill requirement of designing processors and other low level hardware. Writing, compiling, distributing software is pretty much costless and thanks to higher level programming languages it's accessible even for children. These are quite crucial differences why a movement for hadware freedom would have even harder time succeeding.

There are two current challenges with free software.1. Interoperability: Most people use non-free messaging software which require you to install if you want to keep in touch. You can also not open some formats, or free software doesn’t handle it as it should.2. Some enterprise software are missing: Sure we have Blender that is superb and can replace Maya, and Krita and GIMP can replace Photoshop. But currently there is no free software that can replace things like AutoCAD, Revit, and many other industry-standard software.
