@neauoire @ice "don't believe the rumors" I think this goes for a lot of stuff in computing tbh, quite a bit seems mysterious but if you really dive into it not that much actually is

@ice That's a really cool approach to the #now page. When we relaunched https://circusfreaks.org, we made a now page out of our landing page because I realized that I was not reliable at keeping up a traditional blog. When all the covid nonsense hit, it was an interesting experience to rewrite it to be more in line with our current situation. The archiving idea you used is genius, BTW.Also, despite it being an unusual URL, I'd still submit it to nownownow.com for listing.

@cancel @neauoire @ice I failed when I tried to learn C.the only way I could really understand C was by learning Forth, because there I learned the model of "all the computer's memory is just one big byte array you read and write to in various places" and didn't get distracted by the fact that C pretends to be a high-level language.

@technomancy @cancel @neauoire @ice my experience is that C is super easy to learn. you can basically explain the whole language on a single A4 sheet of paper. it’s actually doing anything useful with it that is hard to figure out.

@technomancy @cancel @neauoire @ice functions, math expressions, return statements, arrays, pointers? sure. cool. easy. now parse JSON? oh. uh… into what?

@cancel as with any computer thing actively developed for more than 20 years, it’s grown a lot of tentacles. C started out as a simple idea though, that could, originally fit on an A4 sheet. its day had different expectations for computer programs though, that didn’t include things like guis, multiple parallel processors, pipelining cpus, and so on. it’s had to adapt in confusing and difficult ways whilst maintaining backwards compatibility. it’s that 50 years of cruft that is hard.

@zensaiyuki @cancel yeah Go is the better C these days :blobcatsurprised: if you remove the gc and goroutines its basically C.

@zensaiyuki @cancel c is actually fine in concept it's just the syntax has become a horrible trash fire. i've been dealing with c parsing for wrappers lately and things like this basically only exist in c:char * const ** const

@cancel @zensaiyuki i much prefer non-c where the array size is attached to the type specifier and not detached in this weird bout of Gaelic grammar.

@cancel @neauoire @ice this is actually fairly good advice and is exactly what I did. Learning pascal first gave me a good footing for C concept and eases you into tricker bits of C. Although I have nearly totally forgotten pascal now as it was about 20 years ago and I haven’t used it since.

@ice I'm trying to focus on connections and caring instead of content. So far, so good.

@ice I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed my video! It was originally created for teenagers attending an international theater festival. They had to move online this year, and my participation was contingent on being able to release the video afterwards as I saw fit.In this case, it meant doing so under a #CreativeCommons license.Knowing that my decision meant that you got to enjoy the work too makes the negotiating seem doubly worth the trouble.

@ice P.S.: I've suspected that there's good food for thought in there for people both on and off the stage.Glad to hear some evidence supporting the idea. :)

@ice It's an extremely relatable fear. Also, don't let my having trained a set of tools fool you: I'm often a huge ball of social anxiety.Weirdly, the clown isn't. :)
