I dunno, I disagree with Ophelia Benson (may go back later and say so on her post about it) and think this is actually a pretty good and thought-provoking list. If I feel motivated (and want to avoid doing something more useful) I may go back and review each line, but by and large I think it’s pretty truthful and provides a useful contrast to the values of other cultures Americans may encounter within the borders of the US. (Yes, I’ll start by agreeing that ‘white culture’ is problematic, but I personally don’t object to it as shorthand for ‘the hegemonic WASP culture of the white English-speaking world, of which white America provides the most extreme example’.)

@DoctorDee I don’t understand the issue with emphasis on scientific method? It only stinks when you try to solve morality problems.

@KoalaKombat @DoctorDee Is it supposed to be a problem? Or is it just describing a culture?

@Gabble I don’t think the scientific method is restricted to white culture, though. But idk I’m white so I wouldn’t be able to say.

@KoalaKombat @Gabble That’s what Ophelia says. If I say eating garlic is part of French culture, does that mean no one else eats garlic?

@DoctorDee ohhhh ok I see when you put it that way. But I thought this was a list of normalizations to think more critically about/be wary of.

@KoalaKombat I think it’s a list of things to bear in mind that they’re not universal, but part of a specific culture. I.e. not everyone values individuality, or expects children to have their own rooms, or ‘wealth=worth’, etc. (I don’t need to type out the whole list, that’s what it’s for)—people a) can have different perspectives on these things and b) are just as ‘correct’ or ‘civilised’ or ‘polite’ as people who do believe/prioritise these things.
