maybe it's just my internet-bubble, but the current wave of interest in plan 9 feels way differentit used to be dozens of people demanding Chrome or Netflix. this time it's people using the software that's already there and making new things with it.way more fun to see, even though it's slightly disorienting

@8zu Plan 9 From Bell Labs is an experimental operating system from a team of researchers which included the inventors of UNIX and the C programming language. It was written in the late 80s and early 90s to test new ideas about software architecture and the idea that the network is fundamental to the system. It was never really commercialized and is sufficiently 'different' from other systems that some people struggle with it.

after so many years of people showing up like "what is this crap, why would I use this, explain to me why I should be interested, convince me to replace arch linux on all my computers or else this OS sucks" it is disarming to see people show up like "hey look at this thing let's make it do tricks"gratifying, but it feels like some kind of hallucination

@khm It's been interesting living vicariously through people on here with this. I do t have the mental bandwidth to learn a new OS right now, so seeing others experimentations is a good replacement. For now, until I can try it myself.

@khm I've gotta ask though, why is Plan 9 so interesting? I wanna get on the hype train too.

@Lofenyy I am extremely hype-averse, so I'll just quote the renowned philosopher Pusha T: "If you know, you know." Plan 9 takes a fundamentally different approach to systems design, and suffers not complexity to live. Some tasks are made inherently easier in this way, and others are rendered nearly impossible. Whether or not this makes it wonderful or abhorrent is up to you, and the things you want to do with a computer.

@khm Is there more information on the differences?
