@p @igel @0x07 kind of shocking that so many more men are overweight than women. this doesn't really concur with my own observation although maybe i just notice overweight women more, or maybe marginal overweight is less noticeable than obesity and there is some sex skew in that regard hmm

@p actually, most weight lifters tend to qualify as slightly overweight rather than obesein general, though, bmi tends to be lenient towards the skinnyfat if anything. for example, im at a healthy weight according to the bmi but my fat percentage is still too high (working on it). plus, weight lifters are only a small percentage of the US population.for the large majority of the pop bmi works just fine, and note that diabetes is partially genetic as well

@p there's also the fact that the heart makes no distinction between muscle and fat, or any type of mass really, so if you have an extreme amount of muscle you have a higher chance of heart problems as well, just like the obese

@lottev Weightlifters were an illustration, but muscle weighs 20% more than fat for constant volume.But overall, the BMI metric seems crazy to me. Like, the scale is off, normal range for my height is "148lbs to 186lbs" (67kg-84kg) and I look like I was starving to death at 165lbs (75kg), the lowest my weight has ever been in my adult life. (I was 19 and broke and ate only rice or ramen most of that year. Photos from back then are painful to look at.) And that's the middle of that range, I don't think I'd survive being 148lbs. Like, trivially, it would have to differ by sex, as a male's skeleton has 50% more mass for the same height than a female's, that makes a difference of several pounds. It seems like a really bad metric overall. I might be wrong but I can't see how.Diabetes rates seem to be a more appropriate metric. Whatever the cause (the genetic component apparently runs in my family, I'm lucky that I never liked sweet stuff), it seems like a better indicator of overall health. > (working on it)Awesome. @lottev Yeah, and it wears a little worse in tall people (mass grows as a cube, heart tissue grows as a square). But my overall point was that people with no body fat can still fit in the "obese" category, BMI isn't really a good metric for telling how chunky people have done got.
